Vilafonté rated South Africa’s #1 red wine

In October, Vilafonté won the Trophy for the best Bordeaux Blend at the Six-Nations Competition in Sydney Australia, a huge accolade with the potential to crown a remarkable year, but there was more to come.

The South Africa Report from Robert Parker; The Wine Advocate by Anthony Mueller, rated Vilafonté the best red wine for 2019, as well as joint-highest rated South African wine overall. The top honours were shared with Chris & Andrea Mullineux for their Mullineux Straw Wine.

It has been said that the harder you practice the luckier you get, coupled with the belief that nothing great is realized overnight.  Team Vilafonté starts the countdown to celebrate their 25-year anniversary this year and will keep you updated on their journey forward.

Founded in 1997, the 42ha estate on the bench of the Simonsberg Mountains with its unique vilafontes soils.  Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec confirmed its affinity to the ancient soils that has been dated as being somewhere between 750 000 and 1.5mil years old.  Planted at high density, these vines adhere to the exquisite struggle; encouraging smaller vines, lower yields and highly concentrated fruit. Vilafonté wines are exclusively from grapes grown on the property.
