The lovely Tokara farm garden has provided a glimpse of what visitors can look forward to in next month’s Garden Town Stellenbosch, where the estate opens its gates for an exclusive viewing of their private garden.
The garden is a secluded sanctuary, nestled within the embrace of indigenous flora, and unfolds a mesmerizing tableau for those fortunate enough to wander its winding paths. The centrepiece, an extraordinary creation known as the Adamastor Moss Garden, emerges as a testament to meticulous artistry and devotion. Over the past two years, under the skilled hands of moss artist Gert van Tonder, it has evolved into a realm of serene tranquillity.
Crafted from local sandstone, granite, and the very mosses that grace the surrounding landscape, this living masterpiece evokes the ethereal beauty and Zen-like serenity of Japan’s renowned gardens. Yet, it remains quintessentially Tokara, a testament to the seamless harmony of stone and indigenous flora that has matured into an enchanted refuge.
The Ferreira family of Tokara has lovingly nurtured this private farm garden into a haven of serenity. Their passion for art seamlessly intertwines with the natural world as life-sized sculptures from their extensive collection punctuate the landscape, leaving visitors in awe.
Anne-Marie Ferreira, an ardent patron of emerging local artists, silently guides this cultural odyssey across the property, where art and winemaking harmoniously coexist. Upon arrival, imposing sculptures welcome visitors, while art pieces grace the walls of the tasting lounge and restaurant. Engaging outdoor exhibitions come to life in the sculpture garden at the Deli, an ever-evolving testament to the intersection of creativity and nature.
The Tokara farm garden can be visited over the weekends of October 27-28 and November 3-4, from 9:00 to 16:00. An entrance fee of R50 per car, guests gain entry at the farm gate to embark on this botanical adventure.
As part of Garden Town Stellenbosch, an initiative by Visit Stellenbosch, this 10-day festival is a celebration of the region’s rich cultural and horticultural tapestry. From open gardens to horticultural tours, flower art, wine tastings, dining, and hiking, it promises an eclectic array of experiences.
This October and November, Tokara’s garden stands as a testament to the harmony of art, nature, and the season’s renewal — a place where visitors can lose themselves in the timeless beauty of the Western Cape’s wine country.
