Time for Annual Mushroom Immersion on Delheim Wine Estate

Mushroom-lovers and nature enthusiasts will this year once again have the opportunity to experience a weekend dedicated to foraging for wild mushrooms in the forests of the renowned Delheim Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, while enjoying various culinary delights and award winning wines.

Delheim’s mountain pine forests are home to over 20 species of wild mushrooms, and on the weekend of 14-15 June, this well-known wine farm on Stellenbosch’s Simonsberg will be welcoming new and experienced mushroom foragers to get out and collect their own mushrooms. Thereafter, a delicious lunch with Delheim wines will be offered in the restaurant.

Each of the two days’ programme comprises a practical guide to mushroom identification followed by a foraging session in the Delheim woods. The day ends with a three-course lunch at the Delheim Restaurant, which includes tasty mushroom-related options with plenty of opportunities for tasting and enjoying the estate’s range of exceptional wines.

The daily mushroom immersion will begin with an introduction by mushroom specialist Gary Goldman while guests enjoy coffee, gluhwein, muffins and rusks. After an informative guide to mushroom identification, a mushroom soup will be served to muster the senses in the right direction before Goldman leads the popular foraging voyage in the Delheim forest. A regular on the estate and well-known in mushrooming circles, Gary will show patrons the way with his expert knowledge and practical insight. Note that Delheim cannot guarantee the discovery of any specific mushrooms.

The foraging session will be followed by lunch in the Delheim Restaurant, where the kitchen team will be offering dishes based on mushroom textures and flavour. Guests will also receive copies of some of Delheim’s family recipes offering a variety of methods for the preparing and cooking of mushrooms. Upon departure after lunch each guest will also receive a bottle of Delheim wine.
