Ed’s letter: The times of our lives

Summertime and the festive season bring ample reasons for celebration, but also for reflection. We can’t help but think about those people who have lent meaning to our lives.

In a moving contribution to this issue of Stellenbosch Visio, artist Henk Serfontein and writer Willemien Brümmer give voice to the profound influence their mothers still have on their work. Their story is one of generosity, friendship and an understanding of the frailty of growing older. Take time to look at the charcoal portrait (p. 109) Henk drew of Willemien’s mother, then suffering from an already advanced stage of dementia. It may just tell you something about your own humanity.

Through Stellenbosch Visio we constantly come in touch with people who enrich our lives and deepen our understanding of the human condition. Over the past six years, I have had the joy of working with a wonderful bunch of people: the editorial and production team at Tip Africa Publishing. I owe them a debt of gratitude for their passion and expertise in bringing to life the ideas and stories in the magazine and on the digital platforms, making the production such a rewarding and life-affirming experience.

This summer, in contrast to the previous one, when we were still grappling with the worst outfalls from the pandemic, we have a rosier outlook – and what better wine to embody that than the excellent rosés we are producing in Stellenbosch. Go explore the best the region can offer, guided by the expert counsel of Emile Joubert (p. 87). But before heading for those long, lazy, sun-drenched days, check out the inspirational swimwear, sunglasses and hats that Jackie Burger is treating us to (p. 30), and heed Elsa Krüger’s warning about sun-wise protection (p. 82).
