SIMON TEMPLAR made the Volvo P1800S world-famous when he drove it in the 1960s’ TV series The Saint. The entire Volvo 1800 series ran from 1961 to 1973, during which time approximately 47 500 vehicles were manufactured. The S model was the most popular version of this classic vehicle (the ‘S’ denotes Sweden, as the model was produced in Gothenburg, Sweden).

The 1967 P1800S features fewer chrome accents than previous models, straighter side trim and a more sophisticated vertical-bar grille, while the responsive 1.8-litre B18B engine with twin SU carburettors delivered a spirited 115 horsepower.
What sets this model apart is its perfect equilibrium: the practicality of a true grand tourer combined with timeless Scandinavian restraint.

Step inside and you’re greeted by supportive high-back bucket seats upholstered in rich, supple leather (often black, red, or saddle tan), offering excellent comfort and lateral support for long journeys. The dashboard features warm wood trim accents paired with a clean layout of classic Smiths gauges – clear, round dials that convey information with straightforward British precision. A handsome two-spoke steering wheel (often with drilled metal spokes) sits ahead of the driver, while chrome detailing on the window frames, door handles, and switchgear adds a touch of sparkle.

The overall cabin feels airy yet intimate in this 2+2 coupe, with simple, high-quality materials, a practical centre console (including a storage box between the seats in this era), and an understated luxury that prioritises durability and timeless style over ostentation. It’s a driver-focused space that still feels special more than half a century later.
