Stellenbosch Teams March into Playoffs

Stellenbosch’s sporting calendar finds itself at a notable juncture, as both Stellenbosch FC and Maties Rugby Club advance to the playoff stages of their respective competitions. It is a timely reminder of the town’s quiet yet consistent contribution to the national and international sporting landscape.

Stellenbosch FC, competing in South Africa’s top football division, has made steady progress throughout the season. 9 April will be remembered for the day FC progressed to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history after defeating defending champions Zamalek 1-0. Their place in the playoffs reflects not only the team’s discipline and commitment, but also the growing interest in professional football within the region. FC will play Tanzania outfit Simba SC in the CAF Cup on 20 April and 26 April respectively.

In parallel, Maties Rugby Club continues its longstanding presence in the Varsity Cup finals with both men’s and women’s teams securing a place in the finals with respective victories over UFS Shimlas and TUKS. Both teams’ passage to the playoffs marks another chapter in a well-established narrative of campus sport. The ladies team face UP-Tuks on 11 April, as they challenge them for the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup trophy, and Maties men’s team will face old foe UCT in Varsity Cup 2025 final on 14 April.

We encourage our community to show support in ways that feel meaningful. These teams are part of a broader Stellenbosch story — one that values participation, perseverance and shared experience.
