Stellenbosch University formally inaugurated Prof Deresh Ramjugernath as its 13th Rector and Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday 1 October 2025 at the Endler Hall. Although he officially assumed office in April, the ceremony marked the public affirmation of his leadership and vision for SU’s future.

In his inaugural address, Ramjugernath acknowledged the history and lineage of SU’s leadership, paid tribute to his family, and outlined eight strategic priorities for the years ahead. These include transformation, digital modernisation, internationalisation, academic excellence, wellbeing, and strengthening the University’s socio-economic impact. He emphasised that SU’s success will be measured not only in rankings, but in the difference it makes to surrounding communities, the region and the continent.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, Council members, staff, students and alumni, who offered their support and confidence in Ramjugernath’s leadership. Musical performances by SU students and the University Choir added a celebratory note to the proceedings, underscoring themes of unity and transformation.
Ramjugernath closed by calling on the SU community to “walk forward together in unity and courage,” signalling the start of a new chapter for one of Africa’s leading research universities.
