The 471 – Sophistication that keeps a low profile

Sneakers just keep getting better. The New Balance 471 boasts a new silhouette that combines elements of 1970s running shoes with a streamlined, modern design. Drawing from the brand’s archives, this model incorporates materials and details that reflect its longstanding connection to performance footwear while ensuring versatility for daily wear.

Designed with subtle nods to vintage running styles, the 471 features breathable mesh underlays, hairy suede overlays, and a cushioned EVA midsole for comfort. Its exposed foam tongue and distinctive toebox overlay pattern reference New Balance’s original 320 model, while leather accents add structure and durability.

Joe Walsh, Lead Footwear Designer at New Balance, explains the approach behind the design: “We wanted to create a shoe that maintains a sleek profile while staying true to our heritage. By incorporating details from past models—like woven mesh and suede overlays—we’ve built something that connects to the brand’s history while offering a contemporary feel.”

The 471 made its debut at this year’s NBA Paris Games, worn courtside by brand ambassador Cameron Brink, further highlighting its adaptability as both a casual and performance-inspired shoe.

Available online at newbalance.co.za and at select New Balance experience stores in Mall of Africa, Canal Walk, and Sandton, the 471 is positioned as a versatile addition to any wardrobe. New colourways will be released on 23 April.
