Collectors’ Corner: The Volvo 544

The Volvo 544 earned a legendary reputation for durability and rally success in events like the 1965 East African Safari Rally. Its rugged build, reliable engines and handling made it a favourite of enthusiasts.

This 1959 model is fitted with a 1.6L ‘A’ engine, where ‘A’ denotes a single carburettor configuration. Produced exclusively as a two‑door, left-hand-drive model with a hatchback design, it is sought after by collectors for features like its one-piece curved windshield, safety advancements like the pioneering three-point seat belts, and the updated interior featuring its distinctive ‘thermometer-style’ ribbon speedometer and a roomier rear seat (marketed as a true five-seater, hence the ‘5’ in 544).

This 1965 model, among the last built, kept its rounded “humpback” three-window body, finished in solid period colours such as Volvo’s red (code 46) and set off by chrome bumpers, window trim, and hubcaps. Inside, the cabin was simple and durable: seats trimmed in vinyl with contrasting fabric inserts, or two-tone vinyl, carpeted floors, and a painted metal dashboard with plain, round instruments. The overall look was functional rather than luxurious, reflecting Volvo’s reputation for toughness.

Such was its popularity that Volvo was forced to run unconventional, self deprecating advertisements that implored owners not to be angry at the company for discontinuing it.

The 544 featured above forms part of the Rola Classic Car Collection.
