Raising the bar

One of the simplest pleasures comes from enjoying the company of others. Hitting the right bar, if you will pardon the pun, lifts the spirits, expanse acquaintances, and if you observe closely – learn new things. With the Art of Duplicity very much on everyone’s lips – an award-winning bar that you can’t find – Stellenbosch Visio’s social editor Mirandi Nel serves up her suggestions of local lounges that deserve your patronage.

Balboa Balcony Bar

A great spot to enjoy after-work (look out for their cocktails) drinks and light meals. Thursdays big (and upcoming) acts take to the stage – announced weekly via social media. A great late (’til curfew kicks in) night hangout for a more mature crowd.

This wine & champagne bar is a cosy hangout in the heart of town with one of the most fun vibes, and even better wines. Enjoy tapas at the old wooden bar counter (inside), or settle on their vintage chairs –  the party usually spills out onto Bird street – where you are greeted friendly and welcome to celebrate with a glass in hand. Try their Brut Savagé Méthode Cap Classique or if the occasion calls for it – some French Champagne.

De Warenmarkt

Located pretty much in the centre of things with plenty of atmosphere – this is the ideal place to sip a glass of wine or exclusive craft gin cocktail. Look out for the MCC and oyster bar, serving the freshest West Coast oysters and mussels.

There are of course plenty of other lovely establishments in and around town – see the Visit Stellenbosch website for a comprehensive list of venues.
