Quarantine Cuisine back on the menu for Stellenbosch

Some local chefs and foodies are doing their best to combat the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, keep spirits up and stay afloat during this trying time.  Screenshot 2020-05-05 at 16.03.32 Shortly after the national lockdown was announced, Bertus Basson recognised the need in the local community to fill bellies with a cup of hot soup. So he and wife Mareli started at home, doing what they do best to combat the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, keep spirits up and stay afloat and top of mind during this trying time. The demand for soup soon outgrew the space available to make it. They are now cooking soup from Eike in Stellenbosch and with a small team, they manage to produce about 250 portions a day. Excitement has grown as more Stellenbosch industry friends joined, all willing to make a difference. Bertus has asked the community to get involved if they have any resources to share, pantry items, fresh vegetables or anything else you would like to get stuck in with, please let them know. A little bit goes a long way.

South African Chef Of The Year Bertus Basson, who owns Stellenbosch restaurants Eike, Overture, Spek en Bone and De Vrije Burger, has also started home deliveries, making use of Uber Eats and his own staff to transport the meals.

Eike is offering the Bertus se Huiskos takeaway concept that provides traditional South African meals with a contemporary touch arranged by South African chef and entrepreneur Bertus Basson. Before lockdown Bertus se Huiskos kicked off. The last few weeks gave them time to think about a way forward and their first menu is now available. Delivery in Stellenbosch, free of charge.
