Produced through a partnership between Kleine Zalze Wines and the Kleine Zalze Empowerment Trust, Visio Vintners was founded on the principles of empowerment, shared prosperity and exceptional winemaking. The award places the brand among the world’s leading wine producers, with only wines scoring between 95 and 96 points receiving Gold status.

The Alliance 2022 is a Stellenbosch red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz, crafted from grapes grown on the estate’s own vineyards. According to the team behind the wine, the blend reflects both the region’s renowned terroir and the collaboration at the heart of the Visio Vintners story.

Trustee Sandra Koen says the recognition is not only a celebration of quality, but also proof that transformation and excellence can go hand in hand. “The award is recognition not only of the wine itself, but of the people behind it and the vision that inspired the project,” she says.

As one of the world’s most respected wine competitions, the Decanter World Wine Awards attracted nearly 17,000 entries from 58 countries this year, making the achievement a significant milestone for both Visio Vintners and Stellenbosch.

By die Sit dit aan!-produksie het vanjaar se finaliste hulle musikale ontwikkeling oor die afgelope ses maande ten toon gestel. Die vertoning se naam, Sit dit aan!, is heel gepas, siende dat dit die eerste keer is dat 2024 se deelnemers na ’n jaar se mentorskap en ontwikkeling aan die publiek bekend gestel word.

As deel van ATKV-Crescendo se vyftigste bestaansjaar het die talentvolle musikante die verhoog gedeel met legendes Simon Witbooi (aka HemelBesem), Gracia Nicholls en Whaden Johannes.

“Hierdie reise was nie net altyd mooi en suksesvol nie; daar was onstuimige, ongemaklike tye ook. Elke finalis verdien om te sien watter hoogtes hy of sy reeds bereik het met die wete dat hierdie avontuur nog ver van klaar is,” het Kreatiewe direkteur, Robin Fourie, gesê.

Deur die loop van die jaar het deelnemers geleentheid gekry om deur verskillende mentors in die musiekindustrie touwys gemaak te word. Vanjaar het onder andere Lize Beekman, Bok van Blerk en Jak de Priester ’n draai by die ontluikende musikante gemaak. Daar is egter ook opleiding oor finansies, bemarking ens. om te verseker dat die finaliste uiteindelik ’n volhoubare loopbaan in die kunste kan volg. 

Robin Fourie (aka Die Hooflig) verduidelik dat daar gefokus word om nuwe stemme, liedjies en video’s tot die Afrikaanse musiekindustrie te voeg. “Ons konsentreer egter eers op die menswees van elke deelnemer. Die enigste manier waarop ’n kunstenaar kreatief en nuut kan skep, is eers deur hom- of haarself te vind. Talent is volgens ons nie aan mense gegee om te kompeteer nie, maar om eerder mekaar te versterk en te komplementeer,” sê hy.

Gerrie Lemmer, ATKV-uitvoerende hoof: kultuur, verduidelik dat hierdie bekendstellingskonsert aan die einde van elke jaar ’n hoogtepunt op die ATKV se kalender is. “Dit is net ongelooflik om te sien hoe finaliste vanaf die eerste slypskool in April vanjaar gegroei het tot die kunstenaars wat die gehoor met Sit dit aan! [gesien het],” sê hy.

The Stellenbosch-based distillery’s achievement highlights the craftsmanship and dedication behind Van Ryn’s exquisite creations and underscores the regions growing reputation as a hub for premium spirits.

The Trophy Spirits Show

The Trophy Spirits Show, brought to you by Investec, is the only competition in South Africa which assesses a representative array of international and local high-end spirits, liqueurs and aperitifs available to consumers in the country. Its judging methodology is based on the tried and tested system developed over many years by the Trophy Wine Show. Amongst its key features are three person judging panels, at least one of whose members is an international specialist invited to South Africa specifically to judge the competition.

Entries

The 2024 iteration of the show saw considerable breadth and depth to the entries received across all classes.

There were 106 entries received this year from 17 producers and distributors with 56 brands, spread through 7 categories. In terms of total entries, the whiskey classes saw the greatest number with 33. These were mainly from Scotland, though there were also submissions from South Africa and Ireland. Included in this line-up were malt, grain and blended whiskies, as well as pot-still whiskeys. It is a tribute to the respect in which the show is held that most of the major brands were represented.

The gin classes saw a fair spread of entries across all three categories – London Dry, Distilled and Flavoured Gin, and included local craft submissions as well as entries from many of the international producers.

Brandy was well represented with pot-still submissions from the Cape and France (Cognac). Unsurprisingly, given the worldwide surge in interest in tequila/agave and rum, there were strong entries in these classes. Good representation of vodkas and cream liqueurs completed the judging line-up.

For the first time in the history of the competition a panel could not separate its two top scoring products and finally resolved to share the trophy for the show’s best whiskey between the top grain and the top malt. The annual battle between France and South Africa for the brandy crown saw Van Ryn’s securing this coveted trophy with the Single Potstill Brandy Aged 20 Years.

South Africa’s share of the gold medals and trophies was significant enough to serve as a tribute to the craft and skill of our domestic distillers, and a vindication of Investec’s commitment to an industry which makes a major contribution to employment and to the country’s GDP.

The results of the 2024 Trophy Wine Show, sponsored by Investec, are crucial for Cape wine producers. As we are in a market where domestic sales face significant pressure and exports remain uncertain, triumph at the nation’s most prestigious competition can be transformative for wineries. Savvy wine buyers understand that any medal awarded by the Trophy Wine Show judges is a hallmark of exceptional quality.

At the Trophy Wine Show, quality alone determines the final outcome. The wines are judged blindly by the three-person judging panels. Leading figures in the world of fine wine, such as Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW from Napa, Fongyee Walker MW from China and Claire Blackler MW from London, bring a wealth of judging expertise and an international vision to the panels. The local panellists, all graduates of the Wine Judging Academy run in conjunction with the University of Cape Town, contribute years of experience in determining quality across often large classes as well as hard-earned insights specific to Cape wines.

The Trophy Wine Show is a talent scout discovering new producers and identifying where new investments have led to massive improvements in wine quality, all while being a driver of innovation. The show has led the campaign in South Africa to reduce unnecessary packaging weight, which has an impact on the industry’s carbon footprint. Since 2023 every bottle entered for judging is weighed: an astonishing variance of 200% was recorded at this year’s show.

With it being over 200 days since their last defeat, the SFC has secured their spot in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals for the fourth consecutive time, where they will play against Mamelodi Sundowns. As their last defeat over six months ago occurred against Mamelodi Sundowns, it’s bound to be a match for the ages! 

Under the guidance of experienced coach Steve Barker, a culture of excellence ingrained within the team, and the support from their local fanbase, SFC’s trajectory suggests a promising future filled with continued success and growth.

“We all know how football can bring people together. The entire town now has one team that they can support and be a part of,” Steve told Stellenbosch Visio in an article last year.
