Visit Stellenbosch continues to prioritise initiatives that strengthen the local tourism economy with its newly signed Joint Marketing Agreement with Cape Town Tourism. Announced during Tourism Month, the partnership is designed to draw more overnight visitors, increase length of stay and channel greater economic benefit to Stellenbosch businesses and communities through a connected Cape journey.

The collaboration brings together two complementary destinations that sit naturally within the same itinerary. Cape Town offers coastline, city energy and cultural attractions, while Stellenbosch contributes wine, food, heritage, art, nature, shopping and distinctive local experiences. Together they create a richer regional offering that rewards an extra night or two.

Under the agreement the organisations will develop joint itineraries, share content and run collaborative campaigns across their digital channels. These efforts will be supported by joint media and trade activities. Particular attention will be given to domestic travellers during school holidays, long weekends and the festive season, while also creating year-round reasons to visit and helping to address seasonality.

The aim is straightforward: visitors who plan a trip to one destination will be encouraged to add the other, extending their stay and exploring more of the region. Joint content will highlight the range of experiences available across both places, with campaigns, competitions and giveaways opening opportunities for tourism businesses on both sides to take part in shared storytelling. Where relevant, international media and trade engagement will present Cape Town and Stellenbosch as complementary stops within a longer South African itinerary.

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, notes that Cape Town can easily fill a holiday yet also serves as a gateway to the wider Cape. “Stellenbosch adds another dimension to the Cape Town experience, and vice versa,” he says. “There is a real opportunity to encourage visitors to stay longer, explore more and experience the diversity of our region. This partnership gives us a platform to make that connection more visible, particularly during key travel periods and throughout the year.”

Alderman James Vos, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, points to strong recent performance figures: 1.44 million international overnight visitors and 1.42 million domestic overnight trips in 2025. The next step, he argues, is converting that demand into longer stays and greater economic benefit. “Visitors don’t experience destinations by municipal boundaries, and neither should our tourism thinking,” he says. “By connecting Cape Town and Stellenbosch more deliberately, we can encourage visitors to stay another night, explore more and spend more. Every additional night creates opportunities across the tourism value chain.”

Annemie Liebenberg, CEO of Visit Stellenbosch, emphasises the practical value for the local tourism economy. Longer stays translate into more visitor spend, more nights in accommodation and broader benefits for businesses. She also highlights the partnership’s role in tackling seasonality: “When we work together to grow the overall tourism pie, there is greater opportunity for both destinations and for the businesses and communities that depend on tourism.”

Stellenbosch itself recorded more than 1.35 million overnight visitors in 2025, contributing an estimated R13 billion in total economic impact. The new collaboration builds on the established strengths of both destinations while creating fresh opportunities to distribute demand, increase length of stay and widen participation in the visitor economy.

For travellers the invitation is simple: Cape Town and Stellenbosch. One more night. So much more to experience.

SOARING ABOVE THE FYNBOS

Adventure seekers can discover the Elgin Valley from a whole new perspective with Cape Canopy Tour, a thrilling zipline excursion in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve.

Established in 2014 in partnership with CapeNature, this award- winning attraction takes guests more than 1 000m above sea level, combining breathtaking mountain scenery with an adrenaline-filled flight through the fynbos-covered landscape.

The half-day tour begins with a 4×4 drive into the mountains before guests take to the skies on a series of 11 exhilarating zipline slides of up to 300m. Along the route, visitors cross elevated platforms, soar above the Riviersonderend Gorge and navigate a suspension bridge above a spectacular double waterfall.

Suitable for guests aged five to 75, the four- to five-hour outing includes all equipment, training, conservation fees, a return mountain transfer, and the services of two trained Cape Canopy Tour guides. It’s an unforgettable way to explore the natural beauty of the Cape from above.

CALLING ALL HIKERS AND TRAIL RUNNERS

Stellenbosch Trail Fund (STF) is now working with Stellenbosch University to help maintain the hiking and running routes on Coetzenburg, showing that life is not only about mountain biking!

Significant repair work has already taken place and will continue consistently.

STF has also obtained approval from CapeNature to start repair work on the hiking trails inside Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, which are in dire need of regular maintenance.

STELLENBOSCH ENGINEERS REACH FOR THE MOON

Researchers and postgraduate students from Stellenbosch University (SU) are playing a key role in one of Africa’s most ambitious space projects, contributing to technology that could soon make its way to the moon.

The SU’s Electronic Systems Laboratory (ESL) has been involved in the development of electronics for Africa2Moon, a South Africa-led initiative selected as one of the international payloads aboard China’s Chang’e-8 lunar mission, scheduled to launch in 2029. The mission aims to deploy the first Africa-designed low-frequency radio telescope antennas on the moon’s south pole, paving the way for future scientific discoveries that cannot be achieved from Earth.

Working alongside organisations that include the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (Sarao), the South African National Space Agency (Sansa) and several local universities and space technology companies, the ESL team has helped design the electronic systems that will allow the payload to communicate with the lunar lander.

Four SU MEng students also joined the project, developing key electronic and communication systems while balancing their postgraduate studies. Their work forms part of a technology demonstrator that will undergo testing before the flight-ready model is built.

For the ESL, the project continues a legacy of more than three decades of South African space engineering. Established as the development facility for South Africa’s first satellite, Sunsat, the laboratory has since contributed to numerous satellite, robotics and autonomous systems projects while training generations of engineers.

If successful, Africa2Moon will eventually deploy 55 lunar antennas – one for each African nation – creating the first African radio telescope array on the moon and opening a new frontier for both African science and space exploration.

LA PETITE FERME WELCOMES CHEF RICHARD CARSTENS

La Petite Ferme has appointed acclaimed chef Richard Carstens as its new head chef. Richard brings a wealth of fine dining experience and a signature modern French style that is rooted in seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. He joins from Arkeste, where he earned three stars at the 2023 Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards, following an award-winning tenure at Tokara Restaurant.

Set above the Franschhoek Valley, La Petite Ferme is one of the Winelands’ most established destinations, known for its blend of hospitality, wine and country cuisine. Carstens’ arrival signals an exciting new chapter, with his first menu set to showcase a refined, ingredient-driven approach, paired with the estate’s wines.

A LANDMARK BOTANICAL ART COLLECTION LAUNCHES

The Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden launched its first permanent art collection, the James & Shirley Sherwood Botanical Art Collection, in May 2026. Housed in the garden’s historic office building, the collection brings together works by leading and emerging South African botanical artists, with a particular focus on rare and threatened species.

Blending art, science and conservation, the initiative aims to deepen public appreciation for the Cape’s rich botanical heritage while raising awareness of the urgent need for preservation.

Developed from the garden’s annual botanical art exhibitions, the collection is closely tied to its conservation work, which includes more than 200 plant species at risk of extinction. Many of these are seldom seen in the wild or lie dormant for parts of the year, making the artworks a lasting record of their form and seasonal beauty. The project also supports the next generation of botanical artists through mentorship and access to rare plant collections.

FJÄLLRÄVEN OPENS IN THE WINELANDS

Swedish outdoor brand Fjällräven has opened its doors in the Winelands, bringing its signature blend of Scandinavian design, durability and sustainability to the region. Best known for its Kånken backpacks and hard-wearing G-1000 jackets, the brand offers a curated range of apparel and gear designed for both outdoor adventure and everyday living.

BRANDY ROUTE RELAUNCHES

Just in time for summer, the South African Brandy Foundation (SABF) has relaunched the South African Brandy Route, offering a fresh way to explore the country’s oldest spirit. The relaunch highlighted 19 Brandy Homes and a network of Brandy Hubs, featuring upgraded tasting rooms, cellar tours, inventive food pairings and world-class cocktails across the Western Cape.

Visitors enjoyed experiences ranging from the multi-sensory KWV House of Fire to boutique distillery tastings, while urban Brandy Hubs, including Lanzerac and Cape Town’s Cause|Effect, offered curated cocktails and premium pot-still brandies.

Estates such as Boschendal and Tokara paired aged XO brandies with local culinary treats, blending heritage, terroir and innovation in every glass.

CANTINA BY CHEFS WAREHOUSE

The Chefs Warehouse team brings fresh energy to Church Street with the newly opened Cantina, a 30-seater tapas eatery inspired by the lively culture of San Sebastián.

Co-owner and chef David Schneider has created a space that feels spontaneous and full of life, where guests sip wine, share plates and soak up the buzz. Expect vibrant interiors by Lawrence Holmes and a menu of paella, seafood and playful Peruvian touches.

A collaboration between Liam Tomlin and Bernard Fontannaz of Le Grand Domaine, Cantina blends global flair with local pride. Wines from Argentina and Switzerland share the spotlight with Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, recently named Best Cabernet Sauvignon in the World. Cantina is where the world meets Stellenbosch.

ROSE’D AT LA MOTTE

This summer, La Motte Ateljee welcomes guests with Rose’d, a spectacular art exhibition inspired by the beauty of the rose. Running until 22 February 2026, the show features works by acclaimed artist Heike Teschner Jeske whose immersive, larger-than-life rose installation transforms walls and ceilings, inviting visitors to experience the flower’s grandeur and delicacy up close.

The exhibition also includes monoprints, charcoal drawings, watercolours and ceramic sculptures, alongside selected works from an Open Call exploring the theme ‘Flourish’. A selection of pieces is available for purchase, and floral-inspired workshops will be run alongside the exhibition, creating an interactive experience for visitors.

Rose’d extends across La Motte estate, with subtle rose touches in the Tasting Room, bakery, brasserie and farm shop, offering guests a fully immersive seasonal celebration. Entry to the exhibition is free.

THE STORY OF SOUTH AFRICAN SAUVIGNON BLANC

For the first time, South Africa’s most celebrated white wine cultivar has its story told in one comprehensive publication. The Story of South African Sauvignon Blanc, launched at CapeWine in Cape Town, traces the varietal’s journey from its 19th-century origins at Groot Constantia to its global reputation today.

The 284-page book highlights the people, places and pioneering spirit behind its success, profiling 60 producers and industry leaders including Danie de Wet, Niel Ellis, Charles Hopkins, Barto Eksteen and Thys Louw.

A standout feature is South Africa’s first Sauvignon Blanc aroma wheel, created by Stellenbosch University’s South African Grape and Wine Research Institute (SAGWRI) and Sauvignon Blanc SA. Produced by award-winning Tip Africa Publishing, (publishers of Stellenbosch Visio) the book celebrates the cultivar’s diversity and legacy – and cements its place as a proud ambassador for South African wine. 

CELEBRATE SUMMER AT THE CAPE GRACE

With the launch of the new summer menu at Heirloom restaurant, the Cape Grace continues its tribute to the best of South African heritage. Executive chef Wesli Jacobs has drawn inspiration from the diverse culinary backgrounds of his team, incorporating flavours such as mango achar, biltong dust and Kalahari truffle in his dishes. “We want to tell the heritage story in as creative a way as possible,” he says. Think “pap en vleis that has gone to private school”, as Wesli puts it.

The sashimi with avocado emulsion, grapefruit and candied chilli is a prime example of Heirloom’s focus on quality local ingredients. The just-caught linefish comes from Abalobi, the initiative that connects chefs with small-scale fishers, so every fish is traceable. The menu champions South African cuisine in an authentic and unfussy way that is sure to appeal to locals and tourists alike.

Make time for celebratory drinks in The Library, which now serves esteemed Champagnes and South African MCC by the glass – just in time for the festive season.

TOKARA RARE PLANT FAIR

This past November, Tokara Wine Estate welcomed the public to its annual Rare Plant Fair, an initiative by owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira that combines community and creativity. Since 2018, proceeds from the event have supported the Camphill Farm Community in Hermanus, providing adults who have intellectual disabilities with opportunities to live and work with dignity.

Visitors were able to explore Tokara’s renowned gardens, browse rare and specialist plant stalls and enjoy the contemplative Moss Garden installation by botanical artist Gert van Tonder. Camphill residents hosted interactive workshops, sharing skills and selling home-grown teas, spices and produce, with all proceeds going to the community.

Beyond Tokara’s botanical beauty, the event highlighted the estate’s ongoing commitment to giving back by nurturing both people and place through a shared love of nature.

Nearly two years after the celebrated opening of Mertia in Stellenbosch, Marais Kirsten-Uys and chef Matt van den Berg have unveiled their latest venture, Terra.

Inspired by nature and the elements, Terra reimagines casual dining with an all-day menu that moves seamlessly from breakfast to dinner, seven days a week.

Located in Dorp Street, this new, earthy eatery offers a warm refuge for salt-of-the earth locals and visitors alike. While Matt guides the overall culinary vision as executive chef, the kitchen is led by the experienced Jarryd Morris. Together, these two chefs ensure a fresh, grounded dining experience in the heart of Stellenbosch.

BERTUS BASSON’S TOEVLUG

A new culinary chapter unfolds at Annandale Wines with the opening of Toevlug, the latest venture from acclaimed chef Bertus Basson, led by celebrated chef Drikus Brink. Toevlug celebrates simple, produce-driven South African cooking that honours flavour, seasonality and a sense of place.

Set on one of Stellenbosch’s most historic wine farms, Toevlug is envisaged as a warm, family- friendly sanctuary, a space where guests can slow down, savour good food and enjoy the farm’s natural beauty. The name, meaning ‘sanctuary’, reflects the team’s vision to create a space that feels both nurturing and grounded.

CHEF TEMPELHOFF OPENS ARUM AT BOSCHENDAL

Boschendal Estate has welcomed Arum, a fire-focused, produce-led restaurant from the acclaimed Fyn Group, led by chef-founder Peter Tempelhoff, culinary director Ashley Moss and sommelier Jennifer Hugé. Named after the native arum lily, the restaurant celebrates the farm’s heritage and abundant produce, bringing a farm-to-fire approach to an historic wine estate.

Located in the Werf building, the original cellar of Boschendal’s 1812 manor house, Arum showcases locally sourced ingredients and more than 40 varieties of vegetables, herbs, roots, fruits, and proteins cultivated on the estate. Flame techniques, from subtle grills to smoke and char, highlight the unique flavours of the produce, while a new contemporary bar offers farm-inspired cocktails crafted with house-made tinctures and essences.

The opening marks a bold evolution for Boschendal, which has hosted dining in the Werf since 1977. According to the estate’s CEO Amy Kropman, the restaurant combines Boschendal’s culinary heritage with a fresh, world-class perspective, creating a dining destination that honours the land, its history and its bounty.

TASTE STELLENBOSCH

This past September, Stellenbosch once again proved why it is South Africa’s food and wine capital. Taste Stellenbosch, a month-long celebration of the town’s culinary excellence, brought together more than 30 restaurants offering seasonal menus, chef’s tables and spring-inspired specials that reflected the region’s deep connection to place, people and produce.

Supported by Capitec, the campaign showcased the breadth of Stellenbosch’s dining scene, from local gems like Spek & Bone and De Warenmarkt to acclaimed names such as Dusk, Jardine Restaurant and Klein Joostenberg Bistro. Each venue presented its own creative take on flavour, heritage and hospitality.

According to Visit Stellenbosch CEO Annemarie Linderberg, the initiative captured the town’s blend of heritage, innovation and community.

INVESTEC CAPE TOWN ART FAIR 2026: LISTEN

The Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF) returns from 20 to 22 February 2026 at the CTICC, with the theme ‘Listen’. Now in its 13th edition, the fair invites artists, galleries, collectors and visitors to engage in a deeper, reflective dialogue with contemporary art, exploring the power of attention, silence and responsiveness in a fast-moving world.

New Leadership for Sauvignon Blanc South Africa

On International Women’s Day, Elunda Basson was appointed chairperson of Sauvignon Blanc South Africa, ushering in a new era for the organisation and the cultivar. As cellar master at Steenberg Vineyards since 2019, she has bolstered Constantia’s reputation for premium Sauvignon Blanc. With a background in Cap Classique and experience at Nederburg and Pongrácz, Elunda brings deep expertise to her new role.

Her vision includes driving innovation, celebrating regional diversity, and boosting the cultivar’s global profile. She succeeds RJ Botha, whose leadership helped raise international awareness. Elunda also acknowledged trailblazer Erika Obermeyer and the growing role of women in the industry. Dr Carien Coetzee will join as convenor of the FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10 competition this year, further affirming women’s leadership in this vibrant sector.

Babylonstoren and The Newt present a Karoo Succulent Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show

For the first time at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Babylonstoren and its sister estate, The Newt in Somerset, UK, showcased an authentic Karoo succulent garden from 20 to 24 May 2025. This stunning installation, designed by Katie Lewis of The Newt, and Ernst van Jaarsveld and Cornell Beukes of Babylonstoren, featured South Africa’s indigenous succulents from the Karoo, set amid rock formations reminiscent of their natural habitat.

The garden comprised six key areas, showcasing plants from Namaqualand
to the Eastern Cape, and offered visitors interactive experiences like water-spouting wildlife and a ‘rock piano’.

Emphasising water-wise plants and their resilience in harsh environments, it highlighted the beauty and importance of these succulents, especially in the face of climate change. After the show, the garden was relocated to The Newt as a permanent display.

Together, Babylonstoren and The Newt aim to inspire and educate visitors about sustainable gardening and water-wise practices.

New Leadership for Visit Stellenbosch

Visit Stellenbosch has appointed Annemie Liebenberg as its new chief executive officer.

With over 17 years of experience in strategic tourism marketing, Annemie has played a key role in shaping South Africa’s top travel destinations. She previously held leadership positions at the V&A Waterfront and the City of Cape Town, where she spearheaded the city’s Sustainable Tourism Strategy.

As Stellenbosch strengthens its position as a world-class destination, Annemie’s expertise in sustainable tourism and stakeholder collaboration will be instrumental in driving the region’s growth.

Imibala Trust raises R14 Million for Youth Empowerment

Imibala Trust, a South African NPO dedicated to supporting underprivileged children for over two decades, offers programmes that encourage creativity, critical thinking and self-expression. Its flagship Sponsor-a-Child initiative, along with arts programmes like drama, pottery, music and ballet, empowers young minds and provides opportunities that many would not otherwise have access to.

At its third annual gala at the Vergelegen Wine Estate in February, Imibala raised more than R13 million to further its mission, with 300 guests coming together to support South Africa’s youth.

Light Art at Spier

Spier Light Art returned for its seventh edition, transforming the historic wine farm into a glowing wonderland from 21 March to 21 April 2025. The exhibition featured 16 large-scale, site-specific installations, inviting visitors to wander the grounds after dark and engage with thought-provoking works that explore themes of surveillance, colonial memory and the power of light as both protector and provocateur.

Among this year’s highlights were Swiss artist Sophie Guyot’s text-based installation, created in collaboration with Spier’s agricultural team, and Florian Bach’s striking floodlight intervention, which questioned the role of light in social control. From interactive pieces that responded to movement, to haunting projections evoking the farm’s layered history, the exhibition once again showcased the transformative potential of light art.

Spier Light Art continues to push creative boundaries while remaining free to the public. The 2025 edition reaffirmed Spier’s commitment to fostering contemporary art in the Global South, leaving visitors with a renewed sense of wonder and reflection long after the lights dimmed.

Bergzicht Training Celebrates 33 Years

Bergzicht Training and Development recently celebrated its 33rd anniversary with a special event honouring its founder, Cecile Kotze, while also unveiling newly renovated training facilities. Thanks to funding from Stellenbosch Municipality, the upgrades ensure a modern, well-equipped learning environment for students pursuing careers in hospitality, healthcare and early childhood development.

Bergzicht CEO Renske Minnaar welcomed guests, including Stellenbosch Municipality representatives Councillor Lwando Nkamisa and Councillor Tammy Kumm, along with Cecile’s family and key contributors to the renovation project. A heartfelt tribute was paid to Cecile, whose vision in 1992 laid the foundation for Bergzicht’s ongoing success in vocational training.

Adding to the celebrations, the Hanns Seidel Foundation announced new funding for the development of a training kitchen, reinforcing its long-standing support of Bergzicht.

Attendees also enjoyed a violin performance by staff member Monique Pretorius, setting the tone for a memorable event.

“These upgrades will ensure that our students are trained in a modern, well- equipped environment, preparing them for successful careers,” said Kathy Harris, chair of the Bergzicht Board. With a legacy of empowering individuals through skills development, Bergzicht looks ahead to many more years of growth and impact.

SEEBAMBOES: A Bold New Take on ‘Surf and Turf’

Seebamboes, the new culinary venture from Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart, opened above their seafood-focused restaurant Galjoen in Cape Town. In collaboration with chef Adél Hughes and artist Liebet Jooste, the tasting menu offers a fresh, playful twist on ‘surf and turf,’ highlighting South Africa’s coastal and veld ingredients. The intimate mezzanine setting reflects the connection

between land and sea, with a focus on local sourcing and sustainability. The tasting
menu surprises and delights, with creative pairings like kelp spaghetti with exotic mushrooms and wagyu brisket, snoek mousse with biltong powder, and venison tataki with veldkool. Seebamboes promises an ever-evolving dining experience that blends creativity, flavour and ethical sourcing into a memorable culinary journey.

Future Football Stars to Shine in the Curro Halala Cup

The inaugural Curro Halala Cup, which launched in April 2025, brings together 64 of South Africa’s top under-19 school football teams, all competing for the R100 000 grand prize. This prestigious tournament provides a platform for emerging football talent to shine and potentially secure professional contracts.

The competition is inspired by Curro Northern Academy’s victory at the 2024 Kay Motsepe Schools Championships and aims to elevate school football across South Africa.

Teams are to compete in regional knockout rounds throughout April and May 2025, with the top 16 advancing to the national finals in August 2025 at HeronBridge College, Johannesburg. Schools such as Clapham High School, Durban High School, Westville Boys’ High School, Paul Roos Gymnasium, Grey College, and Krugersdorp High School, are among the contenders.

The Botterblom Collection by Frances VH Mohair Studio at Strauss & Co

In February, Strauss & Co hosted the online auction of the highly anticipated Botterblom Collection by Frances vH Mohair Studio. This exceptional collection of handwoven tapestries, crafted by artisans of the Frances vH Mohair Studio, drew inspiration from the Karoo’s landscapes and the rich cultural heritage of its communities, beautifully blending traditional techniques with contemporary African artistry.

The Botterblom Collection was showcased alongside Woven Legacies: Celebrating African Artistry, an annual auction that celebrates Africa’s evolving craftsmanship. A portion of the proceeds from the sale supported a fund dedicated to empowering women artisans and ensuring the sustainability of their craft.

Collectors were also invited to visit Strauss & Co’s Woodstock offices in Cape Town to view both collections, with a special walkabout by Frances van Hasselt and a screening of a film documenting the making of the Botterblom Collection.

Spier’s Tree-Preneurs

As a Spier Growing For Good initiative, Spier Wine Estate’s Tree-preneurs scheme has been transforming lives and landscapes since 2009, empowering communities by teaching them how to grow and care for indigenous plants. Seedlings are exchanged for essentials like food, clothing and educational support, sparking inspiration and providing much-needed resources.

The manager of the project, Lesley Joemat, who has led it since its inception, ensures that it not only promotes environmental awareness, but also creates opportunities for personal and community growth.

The initiative has helped more than 310 participants from 12 communities barter more than a million indigenous trees. Many are planted in under-resourced areas, including schools, NGOs and river rehabilitation projects. Tree-preneur Tannie Katrina Babs Visagie from Heather Park, for example, uses her vouchers to support a food kitchen for orphans. Her contributions, which include more than 9 300 trees, demonstrate the profound impact this initiative is making. The inaugural Hazendal Festival: Soil Edition brought together a dynamic fusion

Stellenbosch recently went on full display as it welcomed families and friends to the annual Wine Town Stellenbosch. Here, visitors indulged in an extraordinary walk-around, wine-tasting experience. They sipped, tasted and savoured an impressive array of wines from more than 60 award-winning wine producers of the Stellenbosch Wine Route.

The vibrant festival is not just a celebration of wine, but of culinary excellence as well. Visitors enjoyed a sumptuous feast crafted by chefs Adele Grewar and Bertus Basson, alongside Bertus’s talented team. From an exquisite gourmet harvest table to a selection of tantalising small plates, the culinary feast ended off with a table of irresistible sweet treats.

Jonny’s Restaurant

There’s an exciting new restaurant in town, and you’ll find it at 137 Dorp Street. Jonny’s is a Mozambican family restaurant that Melanie Meyers had first opened in Dainfern, Johannesburg, 15 years ago.

In May 2024, Melanie opened another Jonny’s in Stellenbosch alongside her son, Sean. “Sean grew up in the business, working there during holidays and learning the ropes through the years,” says Melanie. “He has always loved the energy of our restaurant and often talked about opening a second one and staying in Stellenbosch after his graduation.” And they knew that finding the perfect location on Sean’s graduation day was a good omen for Jonny’s in Stellenbosch!

Jonny’s serves Mozambican food, but its menu has evolved through the years as customers have requested the inclusion of some ‘not-so-authentic’ dishes.

Delheim Leads Conservation Efforts

With a dedicated management plan to control invasive alien plants, Delheim Wines
– along with the Delheim Hackers, a group of biodiversity conservation volunteers – has taken a proactive stance on combating the harm that invasive alien species do to the environment, the economy and even to human health.

The soils of Delheim support the endangered Boland Granite Fynbos, along with a further 125 species of indigenous plants and a variety of trees and shrubs, many of which are near-threatened, vulnerable or endangered.

Their ongoing efforts to control invasive alien plants have yielded promising results, including improved soil health and the return of indigenous vegetation, such as a bietou that grows only on the Simonsberg, highlighting the importance of collaborative conservation initiatives.

African Jacquard at Textile Experience

Luxury home textiles brand African Jacquard released its new Kelp Forest Collection at the second annual Textile Experience. The immersive experience features an installation showcasing the African Jacquard team’s latest textile creations.

The Kelp Forest Collection’s fabric is woven with natural fibres, such as cotton and linen, as well as SeaCellTM. Although its roots trace back to ancient textile practices, SeaCellTM is a future fabric, combining cellulose fibres (a structural component of plant cell walls) from beech and eucalyptus trees with organic brown seaweed. The result is a soft, breathable fabric with a smooth finish.

According to Christine Daron, the founder of African Jacquard, the creators of SeaCellTM were inspired by the ocean’s rich palette and played with colour, texture and depth to produce fabrics that are as extraordinary as they are timeless.

Babylonstoren Soetmelksvlei

We recently visited Soetmelksvlei, Babylonstoren’s new interactive farm experience set in the late 19th century. Upon arrival, we were taken back in time to an era before widespread industrialisation, when the world moved at a slower pace and people used their hands to craft everything they needed.

“After years of hard work and preparation, it is wonderful to share all the knowledge we’ve acquired with like-minded people who appreciate handwork and craftsmanship,” says Adele Johnson, head of Soetmelksvlei. Adele and her team love to welcome guests to the farm. Soetmelksvlei is an interactive farmyard set up like a small village in the late 19th century to honour the legacy of craftsmanship. All its components were selected and constructed by Babylonstoren’s team of historians and master builders.

Museologist Elsa Vogts, who oversaw the compilation of this multi-sensory, immersive journey through time, was inspired by the culture of self-reliance in farm life in 1897.

UPCYCLE: Transforming Office Waste into Art

UPCYCLE reimagines the future world of work through circular design, which sees local artists transform discarded office furniture into bespoke art pieces. The exhibition is a collaboration between Sanlam, leading global property advisory company JLL and its subsidiary interior design firm Tétris Design and Build – a world-class design, build and furniture business.

Since Covid-19 and the development of new hybrid ways of working, more than a third of all global office desks are empty all week, according to Bloomberg. What’s not spoken about is that each empty office chair ‘costs’ about 72kg CO2 equivalent in carbon to make. Collectively, office furniture has a major environmental impact, accounting for about 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions. And now much of it is sitting in storage or piling up in local landfills, as it often costs more to fix than to replace.

As most of it is made from petroleum-derived synthetic materials, it quickly becomes one of the planet’s greatest polluters. Recognising this, JLL and Tétris collaborated with Sanlam to find creative ways to repurpose their outdated office furniture to be sustainable and future fit.

“This exhibition celebrates the power of design and creativity to help us reimagine possible solutions,” says Sarene Nel, MD of Tétris. “By partnering with leading clients, designers and suppliers, we can make positive change. Our goal is to reduce waste and create efficiencies that work for the environment and the community.”

The winners of the prestigious World Travel Market (WTM) Africa Responsible Tourism Awards were announced at Africa Travel Week 2024 in Cape Town, celebrating businesses and initiatives that are making a positive impact through responsible tourism practices.

The Templeton Prize is awarded annually and honours individuals whose work draws from the scholarly disciplines to explore the deepest questions about humanity and the universe, making it “the world’s most interesting prize”.  In the award press release, the Templeton Prize said about Gobodo-Madikizela: “Her career as a scholar and a public figure is distinguished by her effort to repair ruptures created by past violence and to build a path toward healing and restoration in an ongoing process she calls ‘the reparative quest.’” The president of the John Templeton Foundation, Heather Dill, added: “Her achievements mark her as a leading figure in understanding and confronting the deeply rooted psychological scars borne by those who experienced unimaginable loss.”

Gobodo-Madikizela said she felt a deep sense of gratitude to receive the prize. She referred to it as a “rare gift” that offers an opportunity to fund new research projects at AVReQ, especially on questions of violent histories and repair. “I am interested in how violent histories so often play out transgenerationally in new forms, and on deepening our understanding of complex processes of repair. In my work, I have always pursued new avenues of inquiry, seeking ways of contributing to new frontiers of knowledge. I am hoping that as a team of scholars, researchers, and our network of partners affiliated with AVReQ, we will continue to rise to this critical intellectual challenge in these challenging times,” Gobodo-Madikizela said. “I am excited that I can use the Templeton Prize to help fund our postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows at a time of reduced funding all-round. 

Gobodo-Madikizela has pledged to donate a total of R8 million to Stellenbosch University, which will be allocated as follows: R5m toward an endowment scholarship in the name of her parents, Nobantu and Tukela Gobodo; R1 million to the SUNRISE (Stellenbosch University Research and Innovation Strategic Excellence programme) to support future professors; and R2 million to AVReQ. She said that her hope is that the donation to AVReQ will attract additional co-funding to help postdoctoral fellows to advance to leadership in the knowledge economy, and to support postgraduate students so that they do not have to take on additional work, and can graduate within the funding period of their scholarships. 

Gobodo-Madikizela explained that at its core her work is guided by humanist values and aims to address in new ways the fundamental questions about the transgenerational impact of historical trauma, and “what are the conditions of psychological and moral imagination for repair that might open the possibility for social solidarity and building new futures.”  Her first book, A Human Being Died that Night, was recently reprinted as a Mariner Books classic. “This book has played a big part in the trajectory my work has followed,” she said. “It has certainly contributed to my winning this prize. In it I grapple with the tension between of the horror and the humanity, and I try to explain what’s going on in a way that deepens the complexity.” Gobodo-Madikizela works with a global interdisciplinary network of scholars, with some of whom she has collaborated as co-author, editor, and co-editor of several books on trauma narratives, transgenerational repercussions of historical trauma, and the conditions for interrupting these traumatic repetitions of history. The Templeton Prize is the second prestigious award that Gobodo-Madikizela has won. In 2020, she was awarded the Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship award, which at the time was the most prestigious award of the Oppenheimer Trust. 

Prof. Sibu Moyo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Study said about Gobodo-Madikizela’s prize: “I am delighted that Prof. Gobodo-Madikizela’s contribution has been recognised in this special way. Her plans to donate some of her prize to Stellenbosch University is really humbling and shows her passion for the work she does and dedication to support the next generation of scholars. I hope that her winning the award will inspire the next generation of scholars and set a high bar for excellence in research with the full set of values that she espouses – excellence, compassion, accountability, respect and ethics.” 

Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers, too, is immensely proud of Gobodo-Madikizela’s achievement. “This award once again shows that SU is an enabling environment and contributes to world-leading knowledge production in multiple fields,” he said. 

“I am absolutely delighted to personally, and on behalf of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, offer my heartiest congratulations to Prof Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela,” adds Prof Anthony Leysens, Dean of the SU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. “The Templeton Price is on the level of the Nobel Prize awards, but in the sphere of significant humanist contributions at the intersection of spirituality, religion and science. The list of recipients is impressive (with Archbishop Desmond Tutu being the only other South African to have received this award). Prof Gobodo-Madikizela’s work has inspired and continues to inspire those who, through their research, believe in the power of the humanities to bring about change with the emphasis on mutual understanding, caring, forgiveness and reconciliation. This award recognises her achievements and her contribution to the humanist ideal. As South Africans we should all be proud.”

Die Stalle Spa at Bosjes

Bosjes Farm in the beautiful Breedekloof Winelands invited us to experience their newly opened and expanded ‘wellness destination’, Die Stalle Spa.

Architect Tiaan Meyer and interior designer Liam Mooney were challenged to create a modern extension to Die Stalle while still maintaining the relationship with the wider estate and the existing spa buildings. And they mastered it: the new spa merges seamlessly into the existing farm aesthetic, the low buildings carefully arranged so as not to overshadow the centuries-old manor house as the focal element of the farm.

“We wanted the feeling of envelopment, history, tactility, softness and hospitality to carry through to the new spaces,” says Liam. “It was important to me that the soul be retained, and I aimed to achieve this by making the ‘artist’s hand’ as evident as possible.”

The expansion of Die Stalle introduces six serene treatment rooms. A highlight is the hydrotherapy pool area, which offers a vista of the Waaihoek Mountains. Adjacent to the pool deck lies the Spa Garden, featuring boardwalks that wind through fynbos gardens and past natural freshwater ponds.

“From the varied dining experiences to the luxury accommodation, the gardens to the spa, one day is not enough to discover all that the farm and Die Stalle Spa has to offer,” says Carlen Vorster, CEO of Hospitality & Marketing for Bosjes.

Pebbles Soap for Hope

Dow, Diversey (a Solenis company) and the Pebbles Project have jointly launched the Soap For Hope project. This initiative, backed by Dow’s Business Impact Fund, aims to tackle global challenges using innovative solutions. The Soap For Hope project recycles discarded hotel guest soap to create livelihood opportunities and improve sanitation conditions.

Pebbles Project, a Stellenbosch-based NGO with a wide network of local farm operations, is leading Soap For Hope. “We will train unemployed young adults and women on entrepreneurship to upskill and empower them to run the recycling project as a small business,” said Sophie Warner, founder and CEO of the Pebbles Project. It aims to divert 10 000kg of soap bar waste annually from landfills, distribute recycled soap bars to underserved communities and provide sanitation training. Young adults will also receive entrepreneurship training to manage the recycling operation, fostering empowerment.

The project has gained support from various stakeholders, including Dow, Diversey and Premier Hotels & Resorts. “Soap For Hope is a project that directly engages the local people in helping their own community. At the same time, it helps our hotel customers by diverting tons of solid soap waste from the local landfill. This will contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment in South Africa and create shared value for everyone involved,” said Mariette van Vuuren, sales director South Africa, Diversey.

Frank’s Corner Bar and Grill

The newly opened Franks Corner Bar and Grill in Franschhoek has quickly become a culinary hotspot in the region. Founded by American entrepreneur Frank Rodriguez, along with renowned chef Reuben Riffel and co-owner Alex McCormack, the restaurant offers a modern twist on American cuisine.

S Mile Solutions

S Mile Solutions (Pty) Ltd has launched operations in Stellenbosch. The start-up focuses on providing smart, off-grid infrastructure solutions mounted on pick-up trucks to reach remote communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

It aims to improve living conditions by offering services such as clean water, electricity, primary healthcare and telecommunications. S Mile is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, and is supported by Fraunhofer and Stellenbosch University’s LaunchLab. S Mile plans to relocate to its own commercial property, hire additional staff and continue collaborating with Fraunhofer institutes on water, energy and health-related projects. “From the second year onwards, we will be recruiting at least one engineer, a technical administrator, an accountant and a sales representative,” says CEO Dr Martin Hamann.

Experience the Tradouw Valley

The turn-off to the Joubert-Tradauw wine farm on the R62, as you head to Barrydale in the Klein Karoo, might not catch your eye. However, overlooking it means missing out on award-winning wines produced by the third generation of Joubert farmers in the Tradouw Valley. You’d also miss experiencing Deli Alfresco’s Mediterranean-style Karoo tapas, served on the tin-roofed stoep and under the vine-shaded pergola at rustic tables, set in a lush, unmanicured garden.

Beate Joubert and her husband, Meyer, an award-winning winemaker, moved to the Joubert-Tradauw farm where they turned an old building into a boutique wine cellar. When wine tasters began frequenting the farm, Beate started serving small bites, which eventually led to the creation of the deli, where she still crafts handmade Karoo food with a generous pinch of ‘Beate’. Influenced by her travels, Beate’s cooking is simple, allowing the fresh ingredients to speak for themselves, served beautifully and complementing the farm’s wines. She is also the author of Taste the Little Karoo.

It was the shared passion of Meyer and old school friend Pierre Wahl for expressing the land in their wines, that led to a partnership between Survivor Wines and Joubert-Tradauw. Survivor Wines’s adventurous winemaking style requires sourcing different grape varieties from various regions, now including Tradouw, where they’re expanding rapidly.

So, next time you’re on the R62, pull in, breathe the clean air and the smell of the soil, both instrumental to the success of the food and wine served at Deli Alfresco.

Earthbox

An unprecedented attraction that brings together artistry, ancient geology and engineering, Earthbox is a unique immersive installation designed to offer the public an engaging journey into the earth, travelling back through layers of time to experience the world beneath our feet.

A global first, the installation is located on Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West and is open to the public from 1 November 2023 until 1 May 2024. Visitors to Earthbox will descend into a 24m-long underground chamber that takes them 5m below the surface and just above ground that is between 550 and 560 million years old.

This excavated experience allows them to escape the noise and heat of a busy summer and find quiet and awe by journeying into the earth. Raw earth walls and floors bring visitors close to the textures, scent and gentle sensory experience of a silent world and gives them a glimpse of what time has etched into the walls over millions of years.

The project is the first by international experiential studio The Dream Commission, which is committed to topping up the current global quota of creativity and curiosity through exciting and unusual once-off projects.

‘Kanniedood’ deur Joha van Dyk

In 2020, het Joha haar debuutroman Branderjaer vrygestel. Dié boek was die eerste boek in die Branderjaer-saga. In 2022, het sy die tweede boek Vuurvreter vrygestel. Kanniedood is die derde en nuutste boek in die saga.

Rykaart’s at Longridge Wine Estate is a family-owned restaurant run by Alex and Ella Rykaart. Situated at the foot of the Helderberg mountains, with breathtaking views of the Cape Peninsula and Table Mountain, Rykaart’s offers a set three-course family-style dining experience inspired by the beautiful produce of this biodynamic farm.

Wholesome food and exceptional service have always been close to Alex and Ella’s hearts. Having both worked in some of the top restaurants and hospitality establishments in the Cape Winelands, they took the leap and opened their own restaurant in the heart of their home town, Stellenbosch, in 2021. Oxygen is a unique and essential chemical element – with it you have life; without it, life as we know it cannot exist. The humble farming town of Patensie in the Eastern Cape is where the story of (di)Oxygin begins, where Lindie Cillié, founder of (di)Oxygin, grew up with her family of six siblings, and where she learnt about life, citrus, sacrifice and, above all, love.

The Covid-19 pandemic took a toll on the community of Patensie and on Lindie, who lost both her parents to the virus only five days apart. “They literally died due to a lack of oxygen. But they left a legacy that will never be forgotten, both locally and around the world,” she says. “They were in so many ways the oxygen of the community, providing assistance and encouragement, and sharing their many talents with all those whose paths they crossed – essentially breathing life into everything and everyone in their lives.”

This is the basis of the inspiration for the spirit apéritif (di)Oxygin, in which Lindie combines citrus, her father’s lifelong passion, and the renowned spekboom or ‘tree of wonder’. Not only is the spekboom a carbon sponge that reduces our carbon footprint, it also produces oxygen, the ultimate source of life.

With (di)Oxygin, Lindie hopes to ensure that the spekboom gets propagated far and wide in order to increase global oxygen levels. This will have the combined effect of both protecting our planet and decreasing
the devastating effects of global warming, while also honouring those who lost their lives due to Covid-19.

Punch for Pink

Breast cancer survivors strutted their glorious stuff on the pink carpet at the Punch for Pink Fashion Show that took place at Blaauwklippen Wine Estate during the 20th celebration year of Kamers/Makers. The fashion show raised funds for Reach for Recovery, South Africa’s oldest breast cancer organisation, and celebrated breast cancer survivors in the best way possible.

Beautiful and courageous models lit up the runway as they celebrated their survival and their femininity. The brilliance of local designers who form part of Kamers/Makers was evident in their clothes, jewellery and accessories that were donated to be worn by the models.

Punch for Pink is a call to action, unity and hope, while celebrating the beauty of being a woman!

PLEISTER/PLASTER BY STRIJDOM VAN DER MERWE

In the realm of contemporary art, few names command as much attention and awe as Strijdom van der Merwe. Known for his ability to transform landscapes into extraordinary installations, Strijdom has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. His highly anticipated upcoming project, Pleister/ Plaster, promises to be a transformative and thought-provoking exploration of the relationship between art, nature and the human spirit. Pleister/ Plaster will be an interplay on the idea of climate change and the attempts we make to save what is left of our beautiful earth. Working together with Hanlé Hill and Damien Cadle, the new farm manager at Vriesenhof, Strijdom ploughed a gigantic plaster shape on the land. Seeds have been planted in the shape and by September or October these seeds will be producing flowers, creating a beautiful floral ‘plaster’ that’s massive in size and in meaning.

Prepare to be mesmerised and inspired as Pleister/Plaster blurs the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible, the temporal and the eternal.

UNITY IN MUSIC

The Winelands Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of talented conductor Regard Kühn, brings together a group of dedicated musicians, each with their own professions outside of the music industry. Established in 2005, it aims to bring world-class music to the communities of the Cape Winelands. Its mission is to inspire and enrich audiences through exceptional performances, to promote musical education and to contribute to the cultural development of the region.

It also shines a spotlight on classical compositions, offering a platform for South African composers’ newly created music. In June, they premiered a thrilling overture composed by the talented musician Kristi Boonzaaier. It was a celebration of creativity and of the power of music to inspire and uplift.

Beyond the concert hall, the orchestra aims to make a lasting impact and to bring solace, joy and unity through the art of music.

FOOD & WINE AT LA PETITE FERME

Since April, La Petite Ferme has been hosting exclusive food and wine experiences on the last Friday of every month – and will continue to do so until September. Themed dinners are at the core of these gastronomic evenings, each inspired by one specific ingredient celebrated across five courses.

The mountainside wine estate in Franschhoek blew us away with the explosions of flavour during its first themed evening, where the main ingredient was cinnamon. The menu celebrated the flavour in ways that were subtle, yet strong. With courses ranging from mosbolletjies with cinnamon butter, carrot and cinnamon soup with a carrot sorbet, cinnamon tortellini and pork belly to apple and cinnamon tarte Tatin, La Petite Ferme’s culinary team outdid themselves and our expectations.

There are two themed evenings still to be held, on 25 August and 29 September, when mushroom and chocolate respectively will be celebrated.

TEATERTALENT BY PREMIÈRE

Die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) se Dramadepartement het weer eens studente se teatertalente na die verhoog gebring tydens vanjaar se Première Teaterfees wat van 24–29 Julie aangebied is.

Première is daarop gemik om die skep van nuwe teaterwerk deur die stu- dente van die US Dramadepartement aan te moedig. Hierdie produksies, met ’n tydsduur van 30–50 minute, kon in enige styl of genre aangebied word. Studente aan die departement was – as onder meer akteurs, verhoogbestuurders, teksskrywers en regisseurs – vir alle aspekte van die produksies verantwoordelik.

Die teaterfees het verder ten doel om ’n kultuur van deurlopende artistieke samewerking binne Stellenbosch se dramastudentegemeenskap te bevorder
– dít alles met ’n fokus op die vervaardiging van hoëgehalteproduksies in ’n omgewing wat stimulerend, opwindend, opbouend en inspirerend is.

Daar was vanjaar 12 teaterproduksies by die fees. Temas het ingesluit hoe dit is om as vrou groot te word, gratifikasie aan kelners, ’n moderne Romeo en Juliet, en ’n kwaai oom op ’n trein. ‘The old man who thought he had a dog’ is as die wenproduksie aangewys.
