<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Between the walls of the Wellwood sheep kraal stands a small gabled building that has had more than one life. First it was the farm dairy. Later it was transformed into a home for the remarkable Rubidge Fossil Collection. And now, <a href="https://www.anikalotterart.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anika Lötter</a> is at work here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For decades, the old Dexter dairy held Sidney Rubidge’s fossil collection. Its glass cabinets were filled with hundreds of skulls that drew scientists and visitors from around the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After almost a century of being curated by four generations of Rubidge farmers, the fossils have now been moved from Wellwood to Karoo Origins – The Fossil Centre in Graaff-Reinet. There they continue to tell the story of how a farmer’s discoveries changed our view of prehistoric life.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38921" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Wellwood-Museum.jpg-1984-2025-128x96.jpg 128w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong><em>The Wellwood Cottage museum, where Anika’s Karoo creations take shape.</em></strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The purpose-built display cabinets, lined with red felt, remain on Wellwood. But what they hold now is different.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At her bench, Anika works with a small blowtorch, heating and shaping brass, turning it carefully with a pair of tongs. She wears a leather apron, bent over her work. Files and pliers lie within reach, alongside a chisel and saw.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Around her are her materials: a lock of mohair, a twist of wool, pieces of rock and wood, seeds, scrap metal. Behind her, her work rests in the old glass cabinets. A playlist runs quietly; through the window, a flock of merinos moves towards the kraal.</p>

</figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 1956, Sidney Rubidge, farmer turned fossil-hunter, wrote, “Possibly the first impression a visitor would obtain of my little ‘museum’ is the sheer incongruity of its very existence on a Karoo farm, where normal activities concern themselves with the breeding of merino sheep.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For Anika, the little museum belongs here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The young jewellery and textile designer married into the Rubidge family a year ago. Her husband Richard – great-grandson of Sidney – is the sixth generation to farm Wellwood.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Her own story goes back to a mohair and wool farm near Pearson in the eastern Karoo, where the Lötters have been farming for seven generations. “It sounds like a long time,” she says, “but here it isn’t. Not if you consider that the fossils in this area date back 250 million years.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“When I was a little girl, my dad would take me out for drives in the veld. He’d show me the plants the animals like, the sweet ones. Riding on horseback, I would help bring in the sheep for shearing. I’d hear that we need rain. My sister and I would play in the river and make vases from clay for our boma, decorating them with grasses.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38919" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622-128x96.jpg 128w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1622.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong><em>A new collection in progress.</em></strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It feels natural that a child of the Karoo would go on to create from it. After finishing school in Bloemfontein, she studied visual arts at Stellenbosch University, where her interest in Karoo materials began to take shape. “While I was studying, I started working with natural elements from the Karoo and became interested in the fossil history of the area,” she says. “The more I learnt, the more my idea of time and place began to shift.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She completed her master’s degree in 2024 and returned to the Karoo, settling into the old fossil museum on Wellwood. The connection was immediate. “It felt like a full-circle moment.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38913" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493-128x96.jpg 128w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1493.jpg 1649w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong>Cyclical Bodies <em>made from agave wood, mohair and porcelain.</em></strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Her work follows what is available. Wood, shale, wool, plant material – things gathered from the farm and the surrounding veld. The pieces are shaped by the material itself, its texture and structure.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“It matters what we choose to make things from,” she says. “It changes how we relate to what we wear and how we think about where it comes from.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“I love the way natural materials hold memory and tell stories. The grain in wood records how it has grown, the crimp of wool is a diary of the animal’s health.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38916" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026_03_08_VISIO_KAROO_-1567-128x96.jpg 128w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><strong><em>Playing in porcelain – potential rings in the making. </em></strong></figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What she creates shifts with the landscape. Scorching summers leave the veld dry and stripped back. Rain brings colour. Wind carries seeds and cat’s tail grass that catch in the wool of the sheep.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“There is a deep sense of time here,” she continues. “You realise the landscape has been here long before you. I like that feeling.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anika believes we can choose which materials we work with, what we wear. “In today’s industrialised world,” she says, “there is something very special about creating things out of slow material in an ancient place like the Karoo.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She is currently working on a new collection, more colourful, more wearable, with a strong emphasis on weaving and craft. It is a new body of work for a little museum that once held the story of the ancient Karoo, and now continues the story in a different way.&nbsp;</p>

Housed in the garden’s historic office building, the collection brings together works by leading and emerging South African botanical artists, with a particular focus on rare and threatened species. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Blending art, science and conservation, the initiative aims to deepen public appreciation for the Cape’s rich botanical heritage while raising awareness of the urgent need for preservation.</p>

The project also supports the next generation of botanical artists through mentorship and access to rare plant collections.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WISH YOU WERE HERE was founded by sisters Nicole and Michelle Greeff. Both have marketing degrees from Stellenbosch University and their shared love of travel and collecting souvenirs from each destination sparked the idea for the brand. Inspired by the nostalgia tied to their journeys, they began creating their own souvenirs with a South African twist.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“After our studies, both of us travelled and began collecting souvenirs wherever we went, from a ceramic tile in Portugal to an I Love Uluwatu mug,” says Nicole. “Some were undeniably cheesy, others genuinely special, but all of them held memories of a place and a moment in time.”</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><a href="https://wishyouwereheresouvenirs.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-tote-bag-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38474 size-full" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-tote-bag-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-tote-bag-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-tote-bag-72x96.jpg 72w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-tote-bag.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></a></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They wanted to move away from the familiar concepts of fridge magnets and keyrings, creating souvenirs they would not only want to buy and collect, but also wear themselves. “We wanted to create pieces that feel special, but also playful and fun. We drew on the nostalgia of the classic ‘I <img decoding="async" width="11" height="10" src="blob:https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/50ee9daa-fd91-447b-9c9e-f51d750d421e">&nbsp;NY’ souvenirs and reimagined them through a South African lens,” says Michelle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cape Town was a powerful starting point for them, but never a fixed reference. They agree that the city’s rhythm – vibrant, bold, playful and full of contrasts – shapes how they think about their designs. “Our collections are intentionally fluid; they’re snapshots of a moment lived in South Africa.”</p>
</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Working with a local Cape Town team and mill for all their fabrics allows the sister duo to stay close to the process and responsive to change. “I think we tried on 50 shirts and drove to the fabric mill and back more than 50 times before we found the perfect fit,” says Nicole. “All our pieces are designed for an audience looking for something considered, wearable and current. We wanted the marketing to echo that same energy: fun, quirky and bold.”</p>

<div class="wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile"><figure class="wp-block-media-text__media"><a href="https://wishyouwereheresouvenirs.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-Streetwear-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38476 size-full" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-Streetwear-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-Streetwear-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-Streetwear-72x96.jpg 72w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Wish-you-were-here-Streetwear.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></a></figure><div class="wp-block-media-text__content">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As sisters building a new brand together, Nicole and Michelle have been creatively in sync for as long as they can remember, with their ideas, tastes and curiosities naturally overlapping. Working together has always felt inevitable. “For years, we dreamt of building something of our own, where our creative juices could collide. What we’ve created through Wish You Were Here is fun and exciting, and exactly what we’ve always dreamt it would be.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Their ideas start simply, from scribbling on a piece of paper to refining concepts during a walk after their nine-to-five jobs. These brainstorming sessions, however, reach their peak once their community joins in. “We’re big believers in collaboration, so we rope in friends and creatives we trust. You can’t build something meaningful on your own.”</p>
</div></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Looking ahead, <a href="https://wishyouwereheresouvenirs.co.za/">Wish You Were Here aims</a> to become more physical and experiential, ultimately creating its own presence in Cape Town that feels as personal as its founders.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We want to exist where people are having the best time of their lives: at a party, walking down Kloof Street, sitting at a favourite spot with a glass of wine, going for a swim or exploring the city. Our goal is for both tourists and locals to buy a Wish You Were Here piece in a moment they want to remember – a souvenir tied to a feeling, not just a place.” V</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just under two years after a devastating fire destroyed its historic Manor House, <a href="https://www.blaauwklippen.com/">Blaauwklippen Wine Estate </a>enters a renewed chapter with the opening of the newly rebuilt Blaauwklippen Manor and Jonkershuis. Set on Stellenbosch’s oldest wine farm, the restoration balances heritage and contemporary comfort, honouring the estate’s long-standing legacy while looking firmly to the future.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/MN-Exterior-10.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38205" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/MN-Exterior-10.jpg 1000w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/MN-Exterior-10-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/MN-Exterior-10-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/MN-Exterior-10-144x96.jpg 144w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thoughtfully reimagined, the Manor House and Jonkershuis offer an intimate Winelands retreat surrounded by gardens, lawns and vineyards.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Established in 1682, Blaauwklippen is South Africa’s oldest wine farm and the first registered company in the Cape Winelands. The Manor House and Jonkershuis were thoughtfully reconstructed and reopened earlier this year, reintroducing five-star accommodation to the estate. Guided by heritage architects and master craftsmen, original materials — including centuries-old bricks and fragments of Delft porcelain — were conserved and reinstated. Acclaimed designer Francois du Plessis created interiors that blend classic Cape Dutch elegance with a fresh, colourful touch inspired by the Stellenbosch Mountains.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="960" height="720" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Blaauklippen-Interior.gif" alt="" class="wp-image-38206"/></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The restored Manor House and Jonkershuis now offer 11 luxurious rooms and suites, once again welcoming travellers to the tree-lined avenue and courtyard that have served as a beacon of hospitality since the 1700s. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before tackling your next bathroom build or renovation, explore designer Natalie Bulwer&#8217;s insights on bathroom design.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/VB-Opener-1024x576.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-38170"/></a></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-designer-s-perspective">A Designer’s Perspective</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a practice defined by restraint, nuance, and a finely attuned sense of balance, Cape Town–based interior designer Natalie Bulwer approaches bathrooms as deeply considered extensions of the home. Drawing on a background in fine art and luxury fashion, her work reveals a sensitivity to materiality, proportion, and the quiet power of detail.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this conversation, Bulwer reflects on the art of designing from a blank slate, where architecture, texture, and light converge to shape atmosphere. From the interplay of surfaces and the discipline of editing, to the role of statement pieces, colour, and enduring materials, she offers a thoughtful perspective on crafting spaces that feel both intentional and restorative.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="932" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-2-1-1024x932.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38171" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-2-1-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-2-1-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-2-1-768x699.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-2-1-105x96.jpg 105w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-2-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU BEGIN DESIGNING A BATHROOM FROM A BLANK SLATE?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every bathroom project needs to be viewed as part of the entire home. The architecture, whether classical or modern, must be considered from the outset. One of the primary concerns is whether the project is commercial or residential, as each requires different fixtures, fittings and layouts. I also decide fairly early on whether the bathroom will be a feature space with strong visual impact, or a continuation of the home’s overall aesthetic, something more cohesive and integrated.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="932" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-3-2-1024x932.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38172" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-3-2-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-3-2-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-3-2-768x699.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-3-2-105x96.jpg 105w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-3-2.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHAT ROLE DO SURFACES PLAY IN SETTING THE TONE OF A BATHROOM?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Surfaces play a significant role in defining the mood of a bathroom. I love creating layered textures that balance and complement each other, pairing shiny, reflective finishes with natural wood or textured wall treatments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Countertops might include leather-finished stone or polished marble.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I often recommend starting with a key feature. If you have found a beautiful veined marble, for example, I would move the design forward from that focal point.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU BALANCE TEXTURE WITHOUT OVERWHELMING A RELATIVELY SMALL SPACE?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is currently a strong trend toward layering varied textures in bathrooms. While it can be exciting, it can also become visually overwhelming quite quickly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I prefer using one dominant texture and pairing it with more subtle, understated finishes in the cabinetry and ceramic elements. This creates depth and interest without overwhelming the space.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DO YOU TYPICALLY DESIGN AROUND A HERO OR CENTREPIECE ITEM?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yes, designing around a statement piece can be very effective. A bold wallpaper can act as a powerful centrepiece. Setting a minimal bathtub alongside this element creates a dramatic yet balanced space.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alternatively, a copper-clad bath is an undeniable hero piece. In that case, the surrounding finishes could be understated so that it can be visually appreciated.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU APPROACH COLOUR IN A BATHROOM SETTING?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the moment, I am drawn to earth and spice tones in many of my interiors. These translate beautifully into bathrooms, particularly when paired with white basins, bathtubs and tiled shower enclosures. This contrast creates warmth while still maintaining a sense of freshness.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY ON LIGHTING A BATHROOM WELL?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lighting is essential. I am really enjoying the wide variety of wall lights being used in bathrooms at the moment, they can be both practical and visually striking.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mirrors with integrated lighting have also become very popular with my clients. Thoughtful lighting elevates the entire space and enhances both function and atmosphere.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="932" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-5-1-1024x932.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38176" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-5-1-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-5-1-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-5-1-768x699.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-5-1-105x96.jpg 105w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-5-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU ENSURE GOOD FLOW AND MOVEMENT WITHIN THE SPACE?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ergonomics in bathrooms are just as important as in kitchens, yet they tend to be under-prioritised. The scale of the shower enclosure, for example, and the direction of door openings need to be carefully considered.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHAT DEFINES A BATHROOM THAT FEELS CALM AND RESTORATIVE?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Scale and overall balance within the design are incredibly important. The proportions of vanities, mirrors, shower screens and tile layouts influence how calm a space feels. A thoughtfully designed bathroom supports daily rituals and creates a restorative environment</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO ACCESSORIES FACTOR INTO YOUR BATHROOM DESIGNS?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Accessories should be considered at the very beginning of the design process. It is important to assess personal needs, as everyone has different priorities within the space. Correct placement is key to maintaining harmony and overall proportion.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="932" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-6-1-1024x932.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38175" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-6-1-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-6-1-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-6-1-768x699.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-6-1-105x96.jpg 105w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-6-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHAT DRAWS YOU TO CERTAIN CERAMICS OVER OTHERS?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I tend to gravitate toward classical finishes. White tiles, in their many iterations, are often underrated. I am also drawn to ceramics that offer coordinated trims and accessories, as these make detailing around shower enclosures and vanities seamless.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU SELECT BATHROOM FITTINGS AND FIXTURES?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fittings should feel like a natural extension of the architecture and overall bathroom design. I try not to overthink them, they should continue the language of the sanitary ware and feel cohesive within the space.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW IMPORTANT IS COHESION BETWEEN THE BATHROOM AND THE REST OF THE HOME?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A bathroom should never feel disconnected from the rest of the home. Even if it includes standalone strong visual elements, there should always be a design thread that runs through the entire home, whether through colour, materials, or the general aesthetic.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="932" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-7-1-1024x932.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38173" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-7-1-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-7-1-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-7-1-768x699.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-7-1-105x96.jpg 105w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-7-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU DESIGN BATHROOMS THAT WILL AGE GRACEFULLY?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I aim to create spaces with longevity. That often means exercising restraint in certain areas while allowing expression in others that can be easily updated, such as wall colour. I avoid overly specific trends and gravitate toward timeless layouts and materials. A bathroom can always be refreshed through styling and accessories.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHAT COMMON MISTAKES DO YOU SEE IN BATHROOM DESIGN?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A common mistake is prioritising aesthetics over function. I often come across questionable bathroom lighting. Where possible, larger bathroom areas are always preferable. I would also advise against using too many materials and finishes. This can make the space feel cluttered rather than refined.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://victorianbathrooms.co.za/"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="932" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-8-1-1024x932.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-38174" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-8-1-1024x932.jpg 1024w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-8-1-300x273.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-8-1-768x699.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-8-1-105x96.jpg 105w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/gallery-8-1.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">WHAT ULTIMATELY MAKES A BATHROOM FEEL TRULY LUXURIOUS?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without doubt, a well-designed bathroom with ease of flow, beautiful lighting and a strong sense of intention creates true luxury. Good design and quiet confidence go hand in hand.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">HOW DO YOU THOUGHTFULLY INCORPORATE PLANTS OR GREENERY INTO BATHROOM DESIGN?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In recent years, plants have been reconsidered within bathroom design. I am always mindful of sight lines when choosing larger plants, and I love the architectural quality that greenery brings to a space.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plants soften surrounding hard surfaces and reconnect the bathroom to nature, enhancing its restorative quality.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stellenbosch&#8217;s oak trees were planted at the request of Hendrik Adriaan van Reede under the direction of Simon van der Stel. But these English oaks (<em>Quercus robur</em>) are more than mere foliage. They are living monuments, some formally declared National Monuments, embodying the town&#8217;s rich cultural and historical heritage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, a serious threat now endangers this iconic landscape: the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB, <em>Euwallacea fornicatus</em>). This invasive beetle attacks large trees, particularly vulnerable English oaks, boring into the wood and introducing a harmful fungus that disrupts water transport, leading to decline and death. Many historic trees have already succumbed or are in the process of dying, prompting urgent action to protect Stellenbosch&#8217;s living heritage. <li>Replanting at least 30 new oak trees in 2026 (with ongoing efforts until control is achieved).</li>

<li>Providing three years of dedicated maintenance for new plantings, including soil prep, watering, supports and BioBarrier root control systems.</li>

Galleries from Barcelona, Paris, Lagos, Stockholm and beyond join South African mainstays like&nbsp;Stevenson Gallery,&nbsp;Goodman Gallery&nbsp;and&nbsp;SMAC Gallery&nbsp;– all showing how the city is becoming a vital site of global art exchange.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-standout-artists-and-presentations"><strong>Standout Artists and Presentations</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the full programme spans multiple sections, here are some highlights to watch out for:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Johann Louw</strong>: As a painter and mixed-media artist whose work often explores materiality, abstraction and the interplay of form and texture, Johann&#8217;s bold, tactile canvases invites viewers to slow down and engage with the physicality of the canvas. Represented by SMAC Gallery.<br><strong>• Frances Goodman</strong>: Represented by SMAC Gallery, Frances is known for her inventive use of beads, sequins and everyday materials. She creates sculptural works that play with notions of beauty, value, and societal expectation. <br><strong>• Zanele Muholi</strong>: Celebrated internationally for their powerful explorations of identity and community through photography, Zanele&#8217;s work is featured through Southern Guild’s expansive presentation.<br><strong>• Kaleab Abate</strong>: Represented by Afriart Gallery, Kaleab&#8217;s work explores urban life and identity through layered compositions. These consist of paintings of urban experience and memory in Ethiopia. <br><strong>• <strong>Henry Mzili Mujunga</strong></strong>: Henry&#8217;s art weaves memory and cultural narratives into engagement with place and history.&nbsp; Also represented by Afriart Gallery, his textured works offers an intergenerational and regional perspective aligned with this year’s “Listen” theme.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When two legends of performance and precision unite, everyday rituals become extraordinary. <a href="https://www.smeg.com/za/porsche-x-smeg">Porsche x SMEG</a> reimagines iconic automotive spirit through beautifully crafted appliances designed for life’s most rewarding moments.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.smeg.com/za/porsche-x-smeg"><img decoding="async" width="960" height="720" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-37413" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04.jpg 960w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-450x338.jpg 450w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-225x169.jpg 225w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-900x675.jpg 900w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-20x15.jpg 20w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-04-128x96.jpg 128w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></a></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Born from a shared passion for excellence, this collaboration sees Porsche’s legendary design DNA reimagined through SMEG’s most loved appliances. From poolside pauses to wine-estate afternoons, every detail elevates the everyday.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sleek silhouettes echo Porsche’s aerodynamic lines; matte metallic finishes and precision striping nod subtly to motorsport heritage. An aesthetic that moves seamlessly from architect-designed homes to sun-drenched outdoor living &#8211; refined, intentional, and unmistakably iconic.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.smeg.com/za/porsche-x-smeg"><img decoding="async" width="960" height="720" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-02.gif" alt="" class="wp-image-37411"/></a></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three distinct finishes honour Porsche’s most memorable tones:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Carrara White:</strong> crisp and confident, inspired by the purity of Carrara marble and the clean, sculptural lines found in modern European architecture.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Shade Green:</strong> bold contemporary allure, echoing Porsche’s heritage racing tones while bringing a fresh, modern edge to minimalist spaces.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Salzburg Red: </strong>infused with racing history and velocity, referencing the legendary 1970 Le Mans victory of the 917 KH Salzburg. Produced in individually numbered pieces, it stands as a striking limited edition collector’s finish. Its iconic number 23 detailing and bold striping capture the thrill of performance through a modern lens &#8211; a vivid centrepiece in any considered space.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.smeg.com/za/porsche-x-smeg"><img decoding="async" width="960" height="720" src="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-37412" srcset="https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03.jpg 960w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-450x338.jpg 450w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-225x169.jpg 225w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-900x675.jpg 900w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-20x15.jpg 20w, https://www.stellenboschvisio.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/porsche-x-smeg-visio-blog-03-128x96.jpg 128w" sizes="(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></a></figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Together, these finishes celebrate a legacy of performance through a new lens of functional design. Whether it’s the satisfying click of a kettle switch or a lingering pause over afternoon coffee, this is design that invites you to slow down and savour. It turns a refreshment into a ritual. A break into a memory. A moment into a mood.</p>
