Our picks: this week at the Woordfees

The Toyota US Woordfees is always a big event on the Stellenbosch calendar. Running until 15 March 2020, it delivers the best in Afrikaans music, visual arts, drama, dance, writing and topical discussions right to Stellenbosch. Here are some of our selected highlights for the first week and weekend.

MUSIC

Spoegwolf @Jan Marais Park – 11 March 2020

Catch Spoegwolf life at the J.S. Marais Nature Park on Wednesday evening. These local cult heroes are ready to shake Jan Marais Park with tracks from their new 2020 album, “See”, and will also be jamming out to many of the other hits that made them such a household name in the Winelands and South Africa.

SU Jazz Band Celebrates women at Spier Amphitheatre – 15 March 2020

The SU Jazz Band is grooving under the stars in their own unique, energetic style with three popular, award-winning singers. The evergreen Gloria Bosman, Anna Davel and Lana Crowster, who made her name on The Voice, sing their own compositions as well as those of international and other South African women. Bring your dancing shoes!

Die dinge van ‘n kind @HS Stellenbosch – 11 to 15 March 2020

An adaptation of Marita van der Vyver’s novel of the same name by Francois Toerien into a one-woman show for Cintaine Schutte. This production won the award for Best performance in a solo production at Aardklop 2019.

Radio Raps @Spier Amphitheatre – 14 March 2020

After last year’s sold-out Genuine at the Woodfees, Rikus de Beer (aka Jonathan of Radio Raps) is back with a new one-man show. Life is short, but always remember it remains the longest thing you’ll ever do.

WINING AND DINING

Kerneels, Topkos and Cabernet @Dewarenmarkt – 10 March 2020

Presented by Stellenbosch Visio in collaboration with the restaurant De Warenmarkt and the Stellenbosch Cabernet Collective is sure to be one of the biggest Woordfees highlights. De Warenmarkt’s star chef Norman Human conjures Italian-inspired dishes from Dog’s Mind, the latest novel by Kerneels Breytenbach, Visio’s restaurant writer. The food will be served with local select wines from the Stellenbosch Cabernet Collective. Only 50 seats available, bookings essential.

FASHION, FLOWERS & BUBBLES

Blomsalon @Blomboy Studio – 11 & 13 March 2020

Get the latest fashion news and practice your floral art in this presentation by Stellenbosch Visio, fashion guru Jackie Burger and flower artist Alwijn Burger. Jackie visits Blomboy in his studio to celebrate the age-old love affair between flowers and beauty. The morning kicks off with “Style sentiment”, in which Jackie talks about fashion. Afterwards, guests can enjoy “Bubbles with blossoms”, or a glass of sparkling wine with flower infusions.

The afternoon concludes with a workshop and demonstration by Blomboy. Here, guests can get creative with flowers and play, create and socialize.
