Raising the bar

Not even two months after opening its doors, the Beyerskloof Wynbar already boasts a sturdy following of business professionals, tourists, local residents and students, all arriving in a steady stream to let their hair down and enjoy phenomenal wines.

Bringing the legendary and award-winning name of Beyerskloof into the heart of Stellenbosch was a logical next step for the world’s foremost supplier of Pinotage.

There are plenty of fine dining experiences to choose from in the Cape Winelands. But when it comes to finding a local spot to unwind and enjoy a quick glass of wine or to indulge in, quite literally, the Best Pinotage (Beyerskloof Diesel) and Best Red Blend (Beyerskloof Faith) in the world – as deemed by the International Wine and Spirits Competition panel – and at ridiculously favourable prices, there’s a dearth of them.

The Beyerskloof Wynbar enthusiastically aims to fill this void by offering the estate’s entire range of wines at cellar prices, along with an assortment of delectable fare that ranges from traditional favourites like plankie steak, kerrie lamb sosaties, biltong and droëwors to good old hearty American-style, cheese-smothered beef sliders and grilled cheese sandwiches.

On sunny days and windless evenings, the outside deck instils a sense of togetherness and becomes part of the Stellenbosch energy, luring those who yearn for a break. The interior is a cosy and eclectic balance of post-colonial, modern and post-modern, which immediately gives it a sense of home away from home.

The gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere are the talk of the town and certainly warrant further investigation by any bon vivant.

The menu is so appealing, you’ll be tempted to have a little bit of almost everything. Start with plankie steak which, for those who don’t know, is a favourite braai snack where sirloin or rump is cut into slivers and shared around the table. The incredibly tender and juicy curry lamb cocktail sosaties pair beautifully with the soft red fruits of the Beyerskloof Pinotage Reserve.

The Pinotage slider, a mini version of the famous Beyerskloof Pinotage burger at the Red Leaf Bistro on the Beyerskloof wine farm, undoubtedly deserves a space on your plate. The little stadsjapie Pinotage slider fully matches up to the reputation of its big brother Pinotage burger from the bistro.

Whatever you do, don’t miss out on the gourmet grilled cheese sandwich: two thick slices of freshly baked bread plastered with salted butter hit the flat-top grill, turning the Camembert, mozzarella, Pinotage salami and secret ingredient-filled centre into a molten flow of tasty, cheesy heavenly flavour.

Come see for yourself why the Beyerskloof Wynbar is winning fans throughout Stellenbosch.
