Boutique publisher Tip Africa Publishing pulled out all the stops putting together a proud Winelands publication for Hazendal wine estate this year. The glossy publication was launched at Hazendal’s glittering 320 Gala Event that celebrated the farm’s 320-year history and its transformation to a world-class hospitality destination under the guidance of Russian owner Dr Mark Voloshin.
Dr Voloshin had long expressed the wish to record the history of Hazendal – the Cape farm that he bought 25 years ago in the Bottelary Hills wine ward of Stellenbosch. Thanks to his vision, Hazendal underwent careful restoration while new venues such as a state-of-the-art conference centre, a designer admin building and exceptional wine tasting facilities were added among the well-preserved heritage buildings.
With Hazendal priding itself on being a family destination that caters for diverse tastes, the 206 pages of the book celebrates its highlights, ranging from family eateries like a deli and an outdoor Russian beer garden to top-notch fine dining and wining restaurant Avant-Garde where none other than chef Michélle Theron (former La Motte chef) conjures up a memorable and refined fusion of Russian and South African cuisine.
This is also where Hazendal’s monthly jazz concerts have attracted world-famous musos like American saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and Swedish jazz guitarist Gustav Lundgren, not to forget an array of SA stars that include the legendary Alvin Dyers, Dan Shout, the Gavin Minter Septet and jazz sensation The Unity Band.
The book ends with 20 full-colour pages on the spectacular 1000m2 Wonderdal interactive play centre – specially designed for children by the Voloshin family and the very first of its kind in Africa. Here kids aged 5 to 13 years are ‘edutained’ in an extraordinary wonderland designed to promote interactive competence as children play. This leaves parents free to explore the estate’s many attractions, which include beautifully landscaped gardens with outdoor sculptures by award-winning South African artists, all of which are depicted in the book.
