Another massive weekend ahead as the Winelands prepare for the ABSA Cape Epic, Amazink is set to wow audiences once again with it’s unique brand of township theatre and the Stellenbosch Air Show promises to be the biggest yet. Saddle up and have a browse of our eclectic list of things to do and see this weekend.
All the hard work and training has been done, and all you need to worry about is registering and getting to the start line.
At registration, riders will have the opportunity to test-ride the Prologue route in preparation for the start of their eight-day campaign and make sure their bikes are operating like well-oiled machines.
Come and see the world’s greatest mountain bikers begin their eight days of courage. A wonderful prologue race village allows you to experience everything the race has to offer and more. Be a part of the pre-race nerves and see your favourite riders up close and personal as they stand on the start line at the University of Cape Town.
Spend the day with cheering on the riders as they roll down the start stage and begin their first kilometers of their untamed journey around Table Mountain National Park. You won’t be left to wait as there are plenty of great activities and buzz to keep you busy. Take a walk around and experience the various food offerings or do a little shopping in the logo store for your favourite Absa Cape Epic merchandise. Let the little one’s engage in some active play in the Virgin Active Club V zone or let them have a go around the kiddies pump track while you enjoy a cold one in the infamous Edge Chill Zone on the finish line. If you want to get close to the action, take a walk to the amazing spectator points along the prologue route and cheer for your favourite riders as they tear along the trails.
The first riders head off onto the iconic slopes of Table Mountain from 06:40.
The UCI Women begin their racing from 10:40.
The UCI Men begin their racing from 11:45.

Dubbed “Fashkosh”, a play on Stellenbosch’s official airfield name Fash and Oshkosh, the single biggest air show and gathering of aviation enthusiasts in the world, which takes place annually at Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the USA, the 2019 Stellenbosch Airshow takes place on 23 March and promises to be bigger, louder and more exciting than in previous years. Friday 22 March is a practice day for the participating pilots, and the Stellenbosch Flying Club will host a youth development day with around 200 learners from local schools attending, where young people will have the opportunity to explore possible careers in aviation. They will also be able to see participating pilots and aircraft up-close, the South African Air Force in particular. Read more at Eikestadnuus
