Surrounded by the majestic Hottentots Holland and Helderberg mountains and exuding peace and serenity, Lourensford Estate in Somerset West is the perfect home for South Africa’s first Healing Hub. The holistic health and wellness centre is the fulfilment of the Taylor family’s dream to share their vision of living a happy, healthy and balanced life.
At the launch on 3 November Patricia Taylor and her younger daughter, Samantha, introduced guests to the hub which comprises a Life Retreat Studio, Life Retreat Lifestyle Shop and Spiral Aloe Medical Spa. Their aim is that everyone who visits, will leave healed in some way, whether it is physically, emotionally or spiritually.
The huge project was completed in phases and the Life Retreat Studio on the first floor was the first to open its doors. It is a beautiful, tranquil space where yoga and meditation guru Ryan Edmonds and his team of instructors will help you to align mind, body and soul through movement. In addition to meditation and various styles of yoga (also for children and pregnant women) they present almost any movement class you can think of such as Pilates, Tai Chi, Zumba, Baby Gym, Ballet Barre Conditioning and Kids Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts. They also offer luxury yoga retreats which is hosted by Samantha’s older sister, Kerri-Lee Taylor.
The Life Retreat Lifestyle Shop on the ground floor is a treasure trove of locally produced as well as a select few imported health and luxury products. Here you will find anything from yoga gear, health food and supplements and natural cosmetics to exquisite lifestyle items.
Next door is the Spiral Aloe Medical Spa, the last phase of the hub to open its doors, and for which they brought the likeminded mother and daughter team of Dr. Mothomang Diaho and Nthabiseng Shongwe aboard. The spa’s symbol, the spiral aloe, is found only in Lesotho and its coiling pattern evokes the idea of infinity, ever evolving towards its own perfection.
Its team of professionals will see to your overall well-being and comprises a medical doctor, an iridologist, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, an expert in emotional recovery, a homeopath and an educational psychologist and addiction counsellor. They strive through diverse treatments to facilitate the unburdening of disease while encouraging healthier lifestyles.
People who suffer from persistent pain such as back pain and tendinopathies (e.g. tennis and golfer’s elbow) and inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis may find relief in Cryotherapy that is also available there. Cryogenic temperature is used to stimulate the outer layer of the skin and the extreme cold causes the body to radically respond, increasing blood flow and releasing hormones and neurotransmitters which aids recovery.
On the beauty side of the spa, you will find everything your heart desires, from the usual face and body treatments to customised offerings such as Intensive Pearl Moisture Facial, 24 Carat Goddess Facial, Midas Touch Massage and Mineral Mud Therapy (detox and massage).
You can extend your experience to include a visual feast at another Taylor endeavour, the Art Curator, a gallery on the estate which is run by the patriarch of the family, Henry. You will be blown away by the impressive paintings and sculptures and no wonder because the gallery deals in South African investment art, and specializes in the selling and purchasing of South African Old Master Paintings. It recently opened an African Room where you will find contemporary African art, figure sculptures, traditional beadwork and local-is-lekker bits and pieces.
The historic estate offers many other attractions such as The Tasting Room where you can sample the estate’s acclaimed wines, the brand new Lourensford Car Museum which is housed in the same venue as the ABRU Craft Brewery, The Coffee Roasting Co and the popular restaurant The Millhouse Kitchen.
