Old rivals Paul Roos Gymnasium and Grey College are set for a phenomenal clash next weekend as both teams have managed an unbeaten run in 2018 thus far.
This was almost not the case as Grey squeezed a draw against Glenwood last weekend. A late try by the boys from Natal nearly secured them a big upset, were it not for a missed conversation. The draw leaves Glenwood as the only other unbeaten team in the SA School Rankings.
A further interesting point was raised by SARugbymag.co.za about the availability of the SA Schools players on the day. And with so many stars in both teams, this could have a big impact on the make-up of both teams come 18 August:
“The second impediment to that 18 August ‘final’ is beyond the control of the schools involved. On that exact date last year the SA Schools team played England U18 at the City Ground in Cape Town and there has, so far, been no word from SA Rugby about a repeat of the international series which also involved Wales and France, but if it does take place, there might be a game on the day of the Grey vs Paul Roos game.”
Even with these factors taken into consideration, there is no doubt that the meeting between the two schools in Bloemfontein on August 18th is shaping up as the game of the season and will likely determine who is top dog this year on the school rugby circuit.
