A great rivalry is more than just a competition. It usually emerges when competitors are similar, when they face off repeatedly, and when they’re about evenly matched. When these circumstances arise they can lend a given competitive event a psychological weight that goes well beyond a normal sports match.
These factors are all present and accounted for in the hotly anticipated upcoming Interschools this weekend in Bloemfontein as Paul Roos Gymnasium faces off with Grey College and Bloemhof High School meets Oranje Girls High School as they take each other on in a whole host of different winter sports as well as a variety of other contests.
In SA school rugby few rivalries can match the intensity of the annual interschools between Paul Roos Gimnasium and Grey College. With both these schools first XV rugby teams unbeaten this year and vying for the top spot in the rankings, the excitement for the main match this Saturday has reached fever pitch.
That’s not to take anything away from the battle that will be fought this weekend between the ladies of Bloemhof High School and Oranje Girls High School. With hundreds of young ladies making their way up to the Free State via bus, anticipation is high for the various sporting matches and cultural fixtures in which these talented girls will compete.
