Wine of the month: Muratie Martin Melck Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve 2015

When it comes to cabernets the Stellenbosch region just keeps on growing in reputation, both in South Africa and globally. This month, ALWYN VAN DER MERWE gets an exclusive look at the Muratie Martin Melck Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve 2015.

Stellenbosch cabernets have for good reason grown in stature – the style slots in somewhere between the very upfront new-world style and the more austere old-world style. A case in point is the Muratie Martin Melck Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve 2015, made from vines planted in 1981, 1993 and 1998 on this iconic wine estate.

The Muratie estate has a rich history dating back to 1685, and since Ronnie Melck bought the farm in 1987, his family has painstakingly restored the farm to its former glory. In recent years, the entire range of wines has reflected this increased care and skill.

Of course, when it comes to passion investments such as wine, personal bias will always feature to some extent. In my view, however, the estate’s cabernet sauvignon is definitely worth acquiring for a special occasion.

The Simonsberg area has always delivered wines reflecting the unique terroir. In the case of the Muratie Martin Melck Cabernet Sauvignon Family Reserve 2015, it introduces itself with a beautiful, intense ruby-red colour in the glass. The nose impresses with the scent of currants, plums and blackberries. On the palate, this big yet elegant red wine, which was developed in oak for 20 months, shows a great balance between fine tannins, fruit and cedar-like notes.

The acidity completes the mouth-feel of this wine, which is clearly true to this region. Even after the last sip, this red wine with its lingering finish will be remembered for some time. This wine has enough structure to reward its owners for at least another 10 years.
