In 1925, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University Abraham Izak Perold attempted to combine the best qualities of the robust Hermitage with Pinot noir, a grape that produces great wine but can be rather challenging to grow. And so it was that in the garden of his official residence at Welgevallen Experimental farm, history was made as Pinotage was introduced to the world!
In what has fast become one of South Africa’s favourite annual celebrations, Pinotage Day is one of the highlights on the Winelnand’s social calendar. With Stellenbosch being credited with the creation of this beautiful varietal, saying that locals are spoiled for choice on this day would be a grand understatement.
There’s a lot happening this weekend, which can be overwhelming to keep track of. So we’ve taken the liberty of putting all the best outdoor events and happenings in one easy place for you. So, join us and the rest of Stellenbosch as we raise our collective glasses to the wondrous wine that is Pinotage!
